On October 30, 2024, Disney+ released episodes 17 and 18 of Seoul Busters, a South Korean crime comedy series. The show stars Kim Dong-wook, Park Ji-hwan, Seo Hyun-woo, Park Se-wan, and Lee Seung-woo. It was written by Lee Young-chul and Lee Gwang-jae, and directed by Ahn Jong-yeon and Shin Joong-hoon.
The series centers on a struggling detective unit. After failing a critical case, they face reprimand and reassignment. Their new captain is a highly accomplished officer with a doctorate and an offer from the FBI. Under his command, the team begins cracking high-profile cases.
In the previous episode of Seoul Busters, the squad’s synergy improved. The personalities and private lives of some members also came into focus as they tackled new cases. In episodes 17 and 18 of Seoul Busters, the squad investigates a murder linked to Yu-bin's tragic past, uncovering dangerous secrets while tensions rise, culminating in Jeong-hwan's stabbing.
Seoul Busters episode 17 & 18 recap: Yu-bin’s haunting past resurfaces as the squad faces a deadly new case
Episode 17 of Seoul Busters opens with two students walking home, discussing their recent midterm exam results. One student complains about the difficulty of the math section, while the other claims he found it easy and suggests they visit the game arcade.
The first student laments that he can never match his friend. Suddenly, the second student pauses to tie his shoes, and as a car approaches, the first student impulsively pushes his friend in front of it.
The scene shifts to Han Junho sitting in a cafe, listening to a conversation at a nearby table. He takes note of the woman's address. Outside, Professor Sim keeps an eye on him from his car. But, when Sim glances away briefly, he finds Junho has disappeared.
In the next scene of Seoul Busters, the squad is seen having dinner together. Dongbang Yu-bin (Kim Dong-wook) steps away to take a call, leaving his wallet behind. In it, the others find a picture of him with his ex-girlfriend and speculate on their past relationship. When Yu-bin returns, the topic is dropped.
The following day, a woman's body is discovered in the mountains. The squad takes the case and arrives at the scene. Examining the area, Yu-bin concludes the victim was an art student, possibly killed by a serial murderer and moved to post-mortem. Initially skeptical, the team’s preliminary investigation backs up his theory.
The squad splits up, with Mu Jung-ryeok (Park Ji-hwan) and Jang Tan-sik (Lee Seung-woo) visiting her university, while Seo Min-seo (Park Se-wan) and Jeong Jeong-hwan (Seo Hyun-woo) go to her apartment. They learned she was popular, excelled academically, and was loved by her professors and friends.
In her apartment, Min-seo finds the victim’s cat and decides to care for it temporarily. They also discovered that she had a well-paying job that allowed her to afford a nice apartment.
Yu-bin returns to the crime scene, analyzing the footprints. He deduces the killer is left-handed but trained to be right-handed, under six feet tall, and with smaller feet. Toxicology reveals the presence of Ketaflurane, a general anesthetic, in the victim’s system. This finding brings back memories of Yu-bin’s fiancée, Jae-in, who was killed similarly.
He recalls meeting Jae-in while catching a cab to Seoul and running into her in the US a year later. They reconnected, began dating, got engaged, and moved in together before she was murdered.
When her body was found, she had been clutching a necklace Yu-bin had gifted her, the pendent of which mimicked the "friend" sign in sign language. Suspecting her friends, Yu-bin discovered Han Junho lacked an alibi and had left the country after her murder. Following him, Yu-bin returned to Korea and joined the Violent Crimes unit. In episode 18 of Seoul Busters, the squad learns more about the victim’s life, discovering she had a stalker employed at a pharmaceutical company. Mu Jung-ryeok suspects him, given his access to Ketaflurane, but Yu-bin insists they meet the man first. Jeong-hwan agrees, angering Jung-ryeok, who sees him as a “yes man” to Yu-bin.
Due to jurisdictional issues at the crime scene, the police chief assigns another team to the case, with Professor Sim acting as a mediator. Yu-bin confides in Sim, noting similarities to Jae-in’s case and suspecting Junho. Sim reveals that he has been tracking Junho, who disappeared around the time of the murder.
Meanwhile, Jeong-hwan arrests a voice-phishing scammer at an ATM. This leads to a likely promotion, putting him in the same rank as Jung-ryeok. He states that he resented Jeong-hwan, believing he climbed the ranks by ingratiating himself with Yu-bin. A fight ensues between the two until Yu-bin intervenes, forcing a truce.
Yu-bin and Min-seo meet with the victim’s stalker and conclude he isn’t the killer. On the other hand, the scammer’s gang sees Jeong-hwan on TV, where he’s praised for the arrest. Meanwhile, the gang leader orders his men to learn more about Jeong-hwan and plan revenge, eventually hacking his phone.
Jeong-hwan and Tan-sik trail the stalker to a gambling room, resulting in a scuffle with gang members where Jeong-hwan is forced to use his gun. This leads to disciplinary action and probation, but Yu-bin defends him, insisting he acted out of necessity.
Tan-sik later confesses he lost his gun during the altercation, which forced Jeong-hwan to act. Yu-bin tells him this mistake could cost him his job and urges him to stay focused.
Professor Sim provides Yu-bin with evidence that Junho knew the victim and repeatedly contacted her possibly despite being rejected. This strengthens their suspicion of Junho. Sim’s team arrests Junho, finding shoes in his possession that match the footprints at the crime scene.
As Jeong-hwan leaves the precinct, he gets a call back from a monk at a temple near the murder scene, asking to review the forest's CCTV footage. Meanwhile, Min-seo and her sister are playing with the victim’s cat when they see Sim on the news, speaking about catching the killer. This shocks Min-seo.
In the final scene of Seoul Busters' episode 18, Jeong-hwan is ambushed and stabbed in the woods by an unknown assailant during a rainstorm. Episode 18 of Seoul Busters ends here.
The last two episodes of Seoul Busters, episodes 19 and 20, will be released on Disney+ on November 6, 2024. They will be available at 4 pm KST.
