The first part of Seoul Busters, comprising 4 episodes, follows the nation's least capable detective unit. The drama starts with the unit being reprimanded by their superior and transferred for their failure to apprehend a criminal.
Nevertheless, a highly accomplished police Captain with numerous accolades assumes leadership of the team. Subsequently, the team successfully solves a high-profile case.
Recap of the first part of Seoul Busters: The nation's lowest-ranked detective unit redeems itself
The first episode of Seoul Busters opens with the introduction of Dongbang Yu-Bin with a voice-over telling the audience his accolades. Yu-Bin was a top graduating student from the Korean Police Academy.
He solved numerous cases like the biggest Ponzi scheme in Korean history. He received many praises and badges for his successful career including the Grand Prize in policy promotion.
Yu-Bin joined the special unit too. Later he got his doctorate in applied criminology from New York University. He joined the FBI's leadership program too and was selected as an honorary top FBI agent. However, Yu-bin is determined to return to the police fieldwork of Korea.
On the other hand, Korea's lowest-ranked powerful detective squad is in a park, undercover, keeping eyes on a suspect to catch him. This squad consists of four detectives, Mu Jung-ryeok (Park Ji-hwan), Jeong Jeong-hwan (Seo Hyun-woo), Seo Min-seo (Park Se-wan), and Jang Tan-sik (Lee Seung-woo).
Nevertheless, because of their communication issues, their cover gets blown up. This makes the suspect aware and he runs away. The squad tries to catch him by running behind him, cycling after him, and using an electric scooter and a Taser gun.
However, none of those things help them and they end up hurting themselves. For example, Jang Tan-sik hurts himself with the taser instead of the criminal. Jeong Jeong-hwan's cycle seat got broken and won't let him sit. Mu Jung-ryeok got lost with his scooter, being unable to stop it, even after catching up with the suspect.
This led the unit's then captain to transfer to a suburban seaside and the 4 detectives of the unit to a building away from their main brunch. This building was previously a daycare center and was filled with kid's toys.
The pieces of furniture of the now violent crimes department consist mostly of kids' furniture including the toilet sectionals. The detectives get disturbed by the kids of the daycare often too.
At times like this when they are contemplating if they should quit the job, a new case of murder comes to them. This case is followed by the arrival of the unit's newly recruited captain Dongbang Yu-bin.
The drama then unfolds the mystery of the murder of a big star's manager with this unit trying to solve it. While doing that, the unit is equally uncomfortable with their new captain. They do not understand how he assumes that position suddenly and raises various speculations. However, at the same time, they can not but be surprised by his geniuses.
Seoul Busters takes the storyline back and forth between the budding relationship of this new captain with his unit and them solving the mystery. It blends various hilarious moments with the seriousness of the crime-solving.
The first episode of Seoul Busters then proceeds with the team trying to solve this case. Yu-bin and Seo Min-seo meet with Jang Tae-sik (Kim Jung-don), the head of the management company where the victim, Lim Dongil worked.
During this, she gets awed by Yu-bin's deduction skill. The first episode ends with statements from various people around the victim pointing out the culprit to be the star actor Kang Minjae (Hwang Chan-seong).
The second episode of Seoul Busters begins with Mu Jung-ryeok and Jeong Jeong-hwan following and then arresting a wrong suspect. Mu Jung-ryeok, the senior member of the team, time and again disagrees with Yu-bin.
Jung-ryeon at first dismissed the case as a suicide because of a note, disagreeing with Yu-bin's homicide theory, and then he arrested the wrong suspect. Later this leads Yu-bin to give him an ultimatum that if it happens one more time he will have to hold him responsible.
In a later scene in the second episode of Seoul Busters, Kang Minjae is found dead, after jumping from a balcony on the forty-seven floors. The third episode of Seoul Busters unfolds with the team solving the case.
An actress from Kang Minjae's company, impressed by Mu Jung-ryeok, gives the team intell in exchange for lunch with him. Yu-Bin asks Min-seo to go to see a movie with him.
This leads the department including Min-seo to think Yu-Bin has asked her on a date, making them uncomfortable. However, Yu-Bin went to the movie to check the alibi of Jang Tae-sik, leaving Min-seo in the theatre.
He finds the alibi a lie. Along with it, the intell from the actress and the autopsy report of Kang Minjae leads Yu-bin to be sure that the murderer is Tae-sik. Subsequently, Yu-Bin trying to catch Jang Tae-sik, runs behind him leading to various hilarious moments.
He catches him finally and explains how Jang Tae-sik murdered both Kang Minjae and his manager because he found out Kang Minjae wanted to leave his company. Yu-bin also explained that assuming he was going to die, at his last moment Kang Minjae had swallowed a piece of paper.
This paper was evidence of Tae-sik murdering the manager. This paper was later found in Kang Minjae's autopsy. However, Tae-sik tries to attack Yu-bin with a knife.
Suddenly, Mu Jung-ryeok appears and with his incredible boxing skills rescues Yu-bin and captures Tae-sik. The third episode of Seoul Busters concludes with the team gradually forming a bond.
The fourth episode opens with a flashback from Mu Jung-ryeok's boxing days. This is soon followed by the squad having dinner at a restaurant that turns out to be owned by Mu Jung-ryeok's coach.
After their dinner and the restaurant is closed, it catches on fire with the owner's daughter trapped inside. Despite sustaining severe physical injuries, the daughter survives and is receiving medical attention at a hospital.
The team conducts an investigation and interviews business owners in the vicinity of the restaurant. During the investigation, Mu Jung-ryeok discovers search records related to reports of a stalker in the owner's daughter's cloud.
This information resonates with the forensic report, which suggests that the arsonist may have been someone familiar with the restaurant's door access code. The first part of Seoul Busters ends here, leaving the viewers eagerly waiting for the squad to solve this case along with their humorous chemistry.
Episode 5 of Seoul Busters will be available on Disney+ from 12:30 pm IST on September 18, 2024
