Serendipity’s Embrace Ep 1-2 recap: Chae Jong-hyeop and Kim So-hyun go on a Seoul city tour following their first meet after a decade
In the first episode of Serendipity’s Embrace, Kang Hu-yeong returns to South Korea for business and unexpectedly meets Lee Hong-ju at a café. Mistaking him for her blind date, Lee Hong-ju quickly apologizes and leaves when she realizes Kang Hu-yeong has company.
Later that night, Kang Hu-yeong sees Lee Hong-ju again at a street food stall where she is eating tteokbokki. He orders the same meal and naturally asks her to pass the water and tissue.
Lee Hong-ju also responded to his request, and at that point, he confronted her for pretending to not know him. The two bickered a little as they were high school friends meeting after 10 years. Lee Hong-ju took his phone number and suggested they should do a reunion meet-up with other friends.
Kang Hu-yeong stays at his uncle Baek Wook's (Choi Dae-chul) place for a few days before returning to the U.S. Meeting Lee Hong-ju reminds him of their first encounter on a high school bus and the love letters he received from her. Meanwhile, Lee Hong-ju calls Kim Hye-ji to tell her about seeing Kang Hu-yeong. Kim Hye-ji, excited, recalls that Kang Hu-yeong was her first love. The friends reminisce about their school days when Lee Hong-ju would deliver Kim Hye-ji's love letters to Kang Hu-yeong, as she was too shy to do it herself.
The next day, Kim Hye-ji called up Kang Hu-yeong for a reunion meet-up with the number given by Lee Hong-ju. This time, Kim Hye-ji wanted things to go well with Kang Hu-yeong and Lee Hong-ju supported her.
During the reunion, Kang Hu-yeong met his friend Kwon Sang-pil (Lee Won-jung) at his restaurant, joined by Kim Hye-ji whom he could barely recognize. The three waited for Lee Hong-ju for a while and by the time she reached, Kim Hye-ji was already drunk. Surprisingly Lee Hong-ju also arrived intoxicated.
Kwon Sang-pil asked Kang Hu-yeong to drop Lee Hong-ju home as they lived in the same neighborhood. By the end of the pilot episode of Serendipity’s Embrace, Kang Hu-yeong learned surprising information. He dropped Kim Hye-ji. As Kang Hu-yeong dropped Lee Hong-ju at her place, he realized she lived at the rooftop unit of his uncle's house.
In episode 2 of Serendipity’s Embrace, Lee Hong-ju woke up hungover and realized her chaotic actions in front of Kang Hu-yeong. Kim Hye-ji reached her doorstep and suggested getting hangover-curing soup with her. After this, the best friends returned to Lee Hong-ju's place.
Lee Hong-ju received a call from Uncle Baek Wook. Kang Hu-yeong asked Baek Wook to request Lee Hong-ju to become his guide in Seoul as he had returned after years and wished to go around the city on the weekend. Kang Hu-yeong however asked him to not reveal his name and just say it was his nephew.
As Kim Hye-ji was also sitting with Lee Hong-ju at the time of the call, Baek Wook asked her to join them as well. Kim Hye-ji decided to pass the invite as she was hoping to meet Kang Hu-yeong. On the day of their city tour, Lee Hong-ju was surprised to see Kang Hu-yeong, as she expected Baek Wook's young niece to come out.
This confusion was because in the Korean language, the same word “chokha”, is used for nephew and niece. Moreover, she received a picture of a young girl child from Kang Hu-yeong's uncle.
Kang Hu-yeong explained that the picture of the child that appeared to be a baby girl was his image when he dressed up for a talent show in elementary school. Lee Hong-ju did not want to go with him but as an apology for the reunion meet-up when she arrived late and drunk, she decided to join him.
They went to an amusement park and experienced Korean traditional culture, where Lee Hong-ju donned the attire of a Joseon Dynasty King and Kang Hu-yeong wore the costume of a eunuch.
After spending a day together, Kang Hu-yeong and Lee Hong-ju decide to eat fried chicken next time. A flashback reveals that in high school, Kang Hu-yeong never responded to Kim Hye-ji's love letters, which were always delivered by Lee Hong-ju. The reason was that Kang Hu-yeong wanted to see Lee Hong-ju repeatedly, as she was his first love.
By the end of Serendipity’s Embrace’s second episode, Kang Hu-yeong saved Lee Hong-ju from a situation involving her ex-boyfriend Bang Jun-ho (Yun Ji-on). It is yet to see what happens next in Serendipity’s Embrace.
Serendipity’s Embrace airs every Monday and Tuesday on tvN at 8:50 pm KST.
