Squid Game 2 is scheduled for release on December 26, 2024, while season 3 is confirmed for a 2025 release. On August 1, 2024, director, writer, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk announced the news in a written statement.
The cast of season 2 was reportedly widened, but Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) will still be the focal point where he plans to take down the deadly tournament. Furthermore, it is yet unknown how Gi-hun will seek payback in the forthcoming installment.
Netflix's season 1 ending already showed his intention of declaring war against the game "Front Man" and the VIPs; hence, viewers could expect more action and increased suspense in the new season, Squid Game 2.
5 exhilarating theories that could happen in the upcoming Squid Game 2
Here is the list of 5 theories that could take place in the upcoming new season:
1) Seong Gi-hun could become the next "Front Man" in season 2
The protagonist of Squid Game progressed from a timid gambler to a self-assured champion of a horrifying array of childish games in season 1. In Squid Game 2, he may become the "Front Man" and use his power as the "Front Man" to destroy the death game or to punish bad people.
Furthermore, Gi-hun's worst nightmare would be succumbing to the temptation of the power the tournament bestows upon him as he changes into the people he despises so much. The latter would make for very interesting character development, opening up more possibilities for new character entries into the plot.
2) Seong Gi-hun might compete with other Squid Game victors
Considering how lethal the "Squid Game" tournament is, it wouldn't be surprising if the VIPs wanted to see past winners compete with one another in the second season. In the last season of the cutthroat game, Gi-hun emerged victorious despite all the themes of retribution and punishment.
Therefore, if Squid Game 2 could focus on a different set of games, there may be previous champions among the other contestants. Furthermore, the "Front Man" was the winner of the 2015 Squid Games, which makes it plausible for the VIPs to bring back all victors in the same arena and pick the winner of all winners in this death match.
3) Squid Game 2 may disclose In-ho's reason for becoming the "Front Man"
Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon) learns that his older brother, In-ho, was the winner of the 2015 Squid Game. However, at the end of season 1, both brothers confront each other at the cliff, where Jun-ho gets hit by his older brother and falls off the cliff. Season 2 could reveal the backstory of how In-ho becomes the "Front Man."
This would also mean that Squid Game 2 will not entirely focus on the game like its previous season. If this happens, then there are multiple arcs that the series could create, such as Jun-ho coming back alive or Gi-hun's daughter being kidnapped to pressure him.
4) The game could become international with the VIPs as contestants
Squid Game 2 could move the plot from a domestic to an international arena where South Korea could have been just one facet of the lethal and sinister game. Since Jun-ho already found records with the list of participants, categorized by year, season 2 could even turn into a tournament by bringing in international contestants.
However, another twist of the tale could be that the power-reigning VIPs behind the golden masks could end up becoming the contestants of Squid Game 2. However, this seems more unlikely since there is a season 3 awaiting its release in 2025, and the plot is more about the game than any particular individual.
5) Seong Gi-hun might succeed in shutting down the game but could die in the end
Gi-hun could be seeking retribution for all 455 contestants who were killed in the game in season 1. Although he won, he forfeited his only chance to start a new life with his daughter, along with the prize money, to fight against the "Front Man."
Additionally, the VIPs might use their money and connections to abduct his daughter and use her as bait to get Gi-hun to give up on his revenge quest. Gi-hun could encounter several challenges and might shut down the game. However, he could probably end up losing his life trying to save his daughter.
Squid Game season 1 aired in 2021 and starred big names such as Lee Jung-jae (The Acolyte), Jung Ho-yeon, Wi Ha-jun (The Worst of Evil), Anupam Tripathi, Park Hae-soo (Prison Playbook), Heo Seong-tae (Crash), Lee Byung-hun (Mr. Sunshine), Lee Yoo-mi (Strong Girl Nam-soon), and a special appearance from Gong Yoo.
Squid Game is available on Netflix for global streaming, and season 2 will premiere on the OTT platform starting in December 2024.
