On September 20, 2024, Netflix released the official trailer for Squid Game season 2, which will premiere on December 26. The series will bring back Lee Jung-jae as player 456, Seong Gi-hun, and Lee Byung-hun as The Front Man. Wi Ha-jun will also return as Police Officer Hwang Jun-ho, who was shot by his brother, The Front Man, at the end of season 1.
The new trailer of season 2 opened doors to several fan theories online as netizens conjectured the possible storyline. This includes the new addition to the pink troops—the Front Man's soldiers in pink uniforms with black masks.
5 possible fan theories of Squid Game 2 that are doing the rounds
Squid Game 2 also includes a stellar cast line-up of popular actors such as Im Siwan (Summer Strike), Park Gyu-young (A Good Day To Be A Dog), Lee Jin-uk (Sweet Home), BIGBANG's T.O.P., and Kang Ha-neul (Love Reset), among others. Viewers are stoked to see what new plot twists will each of these characters bring forth.
Here is our list of 5 plausible fan theories fuelled by the latest Netflix trailer:
1) Why did the Front Man knock on Seong Gi-hun's door with his mask on?
The trailer showed a mysterious man in a black uniform and mask, knocking on Seong Gi-hun's (Lee Jung-jae) door. Several fan theories arose about the man being the Front Man himself, who controlled the Squid Game competition. However, some conjectured that perhaps Gi-hun gets caught by Front Man's troops and that's why he personally might have come to meet Gi-hun.
2) Why is Seong Gi-hun's hair different in the trailer?
At the end of Squid Game 1, Seong Gi-hun wins the game but decides to take revenge on the game organizers and the Front Man. He also changed his hair color to bright red. However, Squid Game 2 revealed Gi-hun with shorter and black hair. Several fans speculated that this could hint at the time gap between the two seasons.
3) Was Gi-hun held captive at the Squid Game pink troop's quarters by the Front Man?
Going back to the opening scene, Gi-Hun appeared to be in a motel where he suddenly woke up from a nightmare. However, the next scene showed Gi-hun opening the door and facing the Front Man. The next scene showed a similar interior where all pink troop soldiers marched out of their respective rooms. Some fans conjectured that Gi-hun might have been held captive in the same quarters.
4) Who is the man in the black uniform and mask?
A new addition to the pink troops in Squid Game 2 has stirred several speculations online. Netizens wondered who is the new soldier in a black uniform and a mask with a square motif. A few of the hypotheses suggested that the person might be the younger brother (Wi Ha-joon) of the Front Man. TechRadar reported that Wi Ha-joon didn't deny the possibility of his character turning into a villain in season 2.
5) How did Seong Gi-hun end up back in the game with the same player number?
Earlier, some fans theories suggested that Seong Gi-hun might join the game again in Squid Game 2. Several theories suggested that Gi-hun's daughter might have a role to play in season 2 and to protect her, he was forced to participate in the game again. However, no confirmation has been given by the cast yet.
Squid Game 2 will be available on Netflix starting December 26, 2024. Season 1 is also available on the streaming platform for global viewing.
