The Boyfriend, a Japanese dating reality show, aired the first three episodes on Tuesday, July 9, on Netflix. The same s*x dating show is about nine contestants spending a month together in search of building deep connections, finding love, and strong friendships.
The cast members include Dai, Shun, Taeheon, Gensei, Ryota, Alan, Ikuo, Usak, and Kazuto. The first three episodes focused on cast members adjusting to their schedules to work together to run the coffee truck Brewtiful U, planning the budget and strategy to reach the profit margin. They also shared some intense personal stories while building a bond with each other.
In the first three episodes of The Boyfriend, University student Dai and Artist Shun showed interest in each other and formed a connection.
The Boyfriend Ep 1-3 recap: From confession to their first date, the progress of Dai and Shun's connection
In the first episode of The Boyfriend, Dai, Shun, Taeheon, Gensei, Ryota, and Kazuto were introduced and asked to send letters to their crushes. Dai received letters from Ryota, Gensei, and Kazuto. Shun didn't send a letter, as none of the cast members were his type, but he received one from Dai. Taeheon sent a letter to Kazuto.
Dai showed interest in Shun, discussing him with his friends outside the house and planning to approach him. During a dinner at a club, Dai suggested a game where the loser reveals their crush to someone they trust. Dai lost and took the chance to reveal his crush by writing Shun's name on his phone, making Shun smile.
The popular Japanese Go-go dancer was introduced as the next cast member by the end of the first episode. In the second episode, Brewtiful U, a coffee truck started its business where one of the men led the truck and they could pick a partner for the day.
On the first day, Ryota, who had written a letter to Dai, picked Gensei as his partner and they inaugurated the business. On the second day, Dai picked Shun as his partner, and Shun opened up about his past relationships and why they did not work out between them.
The two gradually started to talk more and Shun saw some inappropriate images of Dai in his phone and immediately returned it to him. This had taken Shun aback as he was reminded of his ex-partner who was a playboy and he started to maintain a distance.
Shun was concerned as he decided to not get involved with someone like his ex-partner again. Dai comforted him, he opened up about his feelings with honesty.
In episode 3 of The Boyfriend, it was Shun’s turn to lead the Brewtiful U and Dai seemed a bit worried that he might not get picked, however, he chose him. Although Shun went with Dai, he did not talk to him much.
Later, Shun stated that he was not sure about his feelings for Dai and that he would see how it progresses in the future. Shun also told Dai that maybe a kiss could confirm if he liked Dai or not.
In The Boyfriend, the eighth cast member, Alan, joined and greeted everyone with a hug. Later, during dinner, Dai became upset by something Alan said and went inside. Shun followed to check on him, which made Dai very happy. During their conversation, Shun revealed he was abandoned by his parents and spent 18 years in an orphanage. The same night, the production team prompts a task, where each member has to choose a person who they would like to go on a date with, members with mutual interest will get a chance to go outside and spend time together.
Dai and Shun were the only couple who matched and went for lunch followed by a visit to the aquarium for their first date. Episode three ended on a cliffhanger leaving the viewers in suspense as Shun revealed that he noticed something about Dai that he did not like.
Ikuo is yet to make an entry on The Boyfriend and it is yet to see how other cast members will form a relationship with each other. Meanwhile, episodes 4,5, and 6 of The Boyfriend will be available on Netflix on Tuesday, July 16, 2024.
