Netflix aired the final episodes of The Boyfriend on Tuesday, July 30, revealing the endgame couples who found romance in the reality dating show. The cast members spent a summer together in a place called "Green Room" in Tateyama, Japan, running a coffee truck.
Japan's first dating series starring Kazuto, Alan, Taeheon, Ikuo, Usak, Dai, Gensei, Ryota, and Shun had kept viewers on their toes with the recent progression in the connections.
University student Dai and the artist Shun have been among the most popular connections among viewers, and they were the first endgame of The Boyfriend. The Japanese-Brazilian IT worker, Alan, and Japanese chef Kazuto are the second and the last couple in The Boyfriend.
Meanwhile, Gensei, Taeheon, Ryota, and Usak graduated from the Green Room as singles. Although some cast members did not experience romance or find love, they built a genuine bond with each other.
The Boyfriend finale: Dai & Shun, Kazuto & Alan emerge as the endgame couples
With the release of episodes 9 and 10, Dai and Shun were revealed to be the first couple of the show. They have been through ups and downs as they faced their emotions. Shun witnessed growth with time and was able to showcase his feelings for Dai with honesty.
Meanwhile, Dai was consistent in his position and approached Shun with utmost sincerity. Despite going through a minor argument in the final episodes, which involved other cast members, Dai and Shun overcame the issue. They were confirmed as the first endgame couple of the same-sex dating show.
Alan and Kazuto were the second couple on the Netflix show. It may be surprising to many viewers as Alan and Kazuto have contrasting personalities and were not on the same page regarding their feelings for most of their time on the show.
Alan was very expressive initially, while Kazuto wished to take things slow. As they were the last two members left on the show, Kazuto expressed that he had created many memories with Alan, and despite their differences, he had always pictured them together. Intending to get to know Alan better in the future, Kazuto wished to leave the show with Alan, and they happily went out together.
The Boyfriend cast members who left as solos
Gensei
According to episode 9 of The Boyfriend, Taiwanese makeup artist Gensei left the show first as a single. Gensei was interested in Ryota, and the two previously went on a private date. However, Ryota was interested in Kazuto, and Gensei had noticed this and did not want to pressure him. Keeping this in mind for the last time, Gensei expressed his feelings for Ryota and bid farewell to the members.
Taeheon
In episode 10, on the last day at the Green Room, South Korean designer Taeheon, who initially showed interest in Kazuto, revealed that he would leave the show first, making the cast members emotional. Although Taeheon could not find a romantic match, he made friends with whom he could share his honest feelings without any filters.
Ikuo
Ikuo, who works in the food service industry, was the third person to bid the cast farewell. Ikuo was the wild card entry who initially seemed to have shaken up Shun and Dai's dynamic; however, he was interested in Kazuto. All the cast members believed Ikuo still had his eyes for Kazuto, but after being rejected by him, he realized that he was more inclined towards Dai.
At the end of The Boyfriend’s episode 9, Shun penned a letter for Dai and read it to him following their work shift. This was a method suggested by Shun to the cast members to know if they liked someone. That is when Ikuo realized he liked Dai more than Kazuto. He confessed his feelings to him and politely asked him to see him as more than just a friend. However, Shun was more important to Dai, and he respectfully declined.
Ryota
The last single man to leave the Green Room was model Ryota, who also found Kazuto attractive. For the last time, Ryota asked Kazuto to see him and convey his feelings.
Ryota said that after being rejected by Kazuto, he believed that his feelings had calmed down, but watching Kazuto return with Alan after their private date made him more curious about him. He asked Kazuto to leave the house with him, but things didn't go his way. Ryota expressed his gratitude towards Kazuto for considering his feelings one last time and bid farewell.
