The Queen Who Crowns episodes 5 & 6 recaps: Taejong’s rebellion fears, Young-sil’s tragedy, and Wongyeong’s gambit
The episode 5 of The Queen Who Crowns opens with King Taejong stabbing Young-sil in the stomach. Before doing so, he whispers to her that his actions are meant to save her life. However, he warns her that while she will survive, she will live as though she id dead.
As Young-sil collapses, Queen Wongyeong screams for her attendants and orders them to fetch a doctor. She rushes to Young-sil's side while Taejong walks away.
The doctor informs that Young-sil will recover but will never be able to conceive again. Devastated, Young-sil breaks down in tears. Wongyeong visiting her tries to console her, saying a concubine’s duty is not solely to bear children.
However, Young-sil, overcome with grief, tells Wongyeong to leave. Wongyeong insists that Young-sil must find a reason to survive and promises to help her.
That night, Taejong visits Chae-ryeong’s chamber, making her happy. She confides in the King’s court lady, saying the war between the King and the Queen has begun. The court lady reminds her that power lies with those who have the ministers’ support, which is still with the Queen. Chae-ryeong dismisses this, claiming the Queen has no one.
The next morning, Taejong goes horse riding with Yi Sook-beon. Yi criticizes Wongyeong for not listening to Taejong, but Taejong sharply rebukes him. They pause to overlook a vast farmland, and Yi explains that it belongs to two powerful ministers who bought it cheaply after Taejong announced plans to move the capital to this area.
Later in this episode of The Queen Who Crowns, they stop at Scholar Kwon Hong’s house, where they hear his daughter, Kwon Seon, playing a musical instrument. Taejong is impressed, and Yi suggests bringing Kwon Seon to the palace as a concubine.
Taejong agrees with the idea that a powerful concubine could challenge the Queen's influence and orders Ha Ryun to establish a Ministry of Royal Weddings. Later that night, a desperate Young-sil pleads with Taejong, asking not to be abandoned, but he dismisses her coldly.
The next morning, Wongyeong learns about the new ministry and rushes to the court. Outside, she overhears her brothers accusing Yi Sook-beon of trying to harm the King and Queen’s relationship, while Yi defends that a wife’s duty is to comfort the King.
Wongyeong then announces her presence and confronts Taejong, opposing the new ministry. She argues that it threatens their children’s and the princess’s future. To protest, she leaves for her parents’ home, reflecting on her past with Taejong along the way.
That night, in Chae-ryeong’s chamber, she removes the ring Wongyeong gave Taejong, exposing a bloody wound beneath it. She licks the wound, but Taejong is unsettled by the empty spot where the ring used to be, as it reminds him of Wongyeong. Speaking to his brother, Yi Bang-gwa, Taejong admits he cannot cut the Queen off entirely.
The next day, overwhelmed by Wongyeong’s absence, Taejong becomes irritable and yells at a minister during court. That night, he goes to her parents’ house to bring her back. Wongyeong refuses to let him in, blaming him for their current situation. Taejong forces the door open, kisses her, and the two reconcile.
Wongyeong returns to the palace the next day. She warns Yi Sook-beon for interfering, and the Ministry of Royal Weddings is dissolved. Kwon Seon is brought to the palace as a concubine and meets Wongyeong, who advises her not to depend entirely on the King’s affection.
In this episode of The Queen Who Crowns, Chae-ryeong challenges Kwon Seon’s higher status, but Taejong overhears and questions her confidence. She claims her usefulness to him, but later apologizes to Wongyeong, who dismisses her.
Wongyeong’s father hosts a banquet, and she arrives early, speaking with her informant, Pan-su. Chae-ryeong, spying on them under the King’s orders, is caught by Wongyeong’s brother. Pan-su reveals that Taejong’s father, Seong-gye, is raising an army but is isolated at Wonjung Port due to ill health.
Chae-ryeong then is brought before Wongyeong, who warns her to stay silent about what she has overheard and return to the palace. This is where the episode 5 of The Queen Who Crowns ends.

As they prepare to decapitate Taejong, Wongyeong’s brother arrives with an army, but Taejong stops them, pleading for the guards to be spared.
