The Tale of Lady Ok, starring Lim Ji-yeon, Choo Young-woo, Yeonwoo, and Kim Jae-won, is a story about a slave woman from the Joseon era. She runs away and fortunately gets a second chance at life by altering her fate as a slave by living under a false identity as Ok Tae-younng—an aristocrat woman.
Lim Ji-yeon (The Glory) plays the lead Gu-deok or Tae-young while Choo Young-woo plays Seung-hwi—a traveler and storyteller who falls in love with Gu-deok/Tae-young at first sight. The mini-series was directed by Jin Hyuk.
Episode 1, released on November 30, opened with a flashforward, and by the looks of it, there seemed to be a rumor going around that Ok Tae-young was the fugitive slave Gu-deok, and she got investigated for having two husbands. She knew the law and took advantage of it when the investigators tried to cuff her. Additionally, she stayed icy and impassive while they stoned her.
As Gu-deok's true identity was uncovered, her backstory was revealed. A flashback showed a young Gu-deok trying to save money to escape by transcribing books and using her photographic memory. She sent signals for help, but her father had lost hope of ever living freely due to the cruel Kim family, who had previously forced him to bury his wife alive in the snow after she fell ill.
The Tale of Lady Ok episode 2, released on December 1, opened with Gu-deok discovering that the robbers/bandits have fled and that everyone in the inn had died. After identifying Grandma Ok's ring on her finger, the cops took her to the Oks.
The Tale of Lady Ok episodes 1 and 2 tell the journey of a scarred and jolly girl transforming into a stoic woman
In The Tale of Lady Ok, Song Seo-in was the eldest son of the previous governor and was set to be So-hye's fiancé. The news of the young couple's engagement coincided with Song Seo-in's birthday. Gu-deok was hired as a cook, but So-hye noticed her food and started looking for her to discipline her out of her whim.
After hiding in Seo-in's yard, Gu-deok encountered him. He questioned why she put herself in danger but hid behind a partition when So-hye appeared. She attempted to strike up a conversation with him, but he lashed out at her. When Gu-deok heard his choice, he dropped his diary in disbelief. She was caught by So-hye, who believed Gu-deok slept with him to get even with her.
Later in The Tale of Lady Ok, Gu-deok was forced to become a concubine, however, she was able to flee with her injured father as other slaves helped them run away. So-hye helped the hunter catch Gu-deok and her father.
Gu-deok and another unknown slave battled their way across rivers and snow. They discovered an inn when Gu-deok's father lost their money and chastised himself. Gu-deok used Seo-in's diamond to pay the innkeeper and worked while she waited for her father to come home.
She lived as the niece of the innkeeper a year later, shielding her from con artists and concerns for her father. When two visitors made advances on her one day, the proprietor of the inn dismissed them. A Qing diplomat and his daughter, Ok Tae-young, arrived along with a retinue.
They became friends and had the same aspiration to practice law. They adopted Gu-deok when the innkeeper implored them to do so. Tae-young recounted her family history with Gu-deok and offered her grandmother's ring. But two rowdy guests struck with bandits, murdering Tae-young's father and taking their possessions. Tae-young and Gu-deok took refuge in a half-burned-out barn.
Tae-young got struck by a log and was killed when the roof collapsed, trying to save Gu-deok. She woke up at the end of The Tale of Lady Ok episode 1 and finds that Tae-young's grandma and slave taking care of her, thinking that she is Tae-young. Gu-deok decided to live under the name of Tae-young.
Gu-deok told Tae-young's grandma about her real identity. Grandma instructed her to pretend to be Tae-young till the bandits and Tae-young's murderers were arrested.
Gu-deok aka Tae-young lived the life of Lady Ok Tae-young. Two years later, during an event, she came across Seung-hwi, who had been in love with Tae-young. Not aware of the reality of Tae-young's death and Gu-deok taking her place, Seung-hwi tries to woo her.
However, Gu-deok decided to honor Tae-young's memories and feelings toward Seung-hwi and end things with him. The Tale of Lady Ok episode 2 ended with Madam Song being confronted by Mak-sim.
In front of the magistrate, Tae-young accused Madam Song of murder and fabricated Baek-yi's death as a suicide. Madam Song was arrested when the magistrate consented to look into it.
The Tale of Lady Ok airs every Saturday and Sunday on JTBC and Kocowa OTT platform. Episodes 3 and 4 will air on December 7 and 8, 2024.
