The Trunk: Exploring unconventional romance and mystery in the latest Netflix limited series
In The Trunk, Gong Yoo plays Jeong-won, a talented music producer dealing with the pain of his past. Meanwhile, Seo Hyun-jin stars as No In-ji, an employee of a mysterious matchmaking company that offers “contract marriages” tailored to its clients’ desires.
The drama centered on their characters’ developing relationship, which oscillates between professional obligations and personal emotions. However, the arrival of the titular trunk disrupts their delicate relationship, forcing them to confront long-buried secrets. As the narrative unfolded, viewers were drawn into the mystery surrounding the trunk while watching the leads navigate their feelings for each other.
The Trunk was released on Netflix Korea on November 29, 2024, and across the world on December 1, 2024. It is a mystery melodrama based on Kim Ryeo-ryeong's novel.
Kim Kyu-tae (It’s Okay, That’s Love) has directed the show while Park Eun-young (Hwarang) is the writer. The drama showed the lead pair (Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-jin) entering a one-year contract marriage orchestrated by the matchmaking company, NM.
The Trunk ended with In-ji and Jeong-won parting ways and ending their contract marriage despite being in love with each other. Both of them are taking time to recover away from romantic relationships. However, they cross paths on a Seoul street where Jeong-won tells her that if they both met two more times then they were destined to be together.
Leaving it to fate, they accidentally met again a second time which made Jeong-won become emotional. He told In-ji that they only need to meet each other accidentally one last time to come back together. Though The Trunk is a limited series, its open-ended conclusion left fans speculating about the potential for additional episodes or spin-offs.
The show wrapped up the primary storyline but left several supporting characters’ arcs unresolved, sparking discussions among viewers about what could happen next.
The Trunk has 8 episodes and is now streaming exclusively on Netflix.
