Twitch streamer and FaZe Clan member Jason "Jasontheween" Yoon recently came under scrutiny on January 4, 2025, following allegations of stalking the K-pop girl group, NewJeans, backstage at Countdown Japan. Despite possessing VIP backstage access, some fans accused him of invading the K-pop girl group's privacy.
Jason Yoon, known online as "Jasontheween," is a prominent Twitch streamer and a member of the renowned esports organization FaZe Clan. He gained popularity for his engaging content, which often includes gaming, vlogging, and interactions with various entertainment sectors, including the K-pop industry.
The controversy began when Jason uploaded a vlog detailing his experience backstage at Countdown Japan, where he encountered NewJeans. Some fans interpreted his actions as invasive, labeling him a "stalker" and comparing his behavior to that of a "sasaeng," a term used in the K-pop community to describe obsessive fans who engage in intrusive actions toward idols.
In response to the allegations, Jason addressed the issue during a live stream, expressing frustration over the accusations and clarifying the situation. He emphasized that his backstage access was legitimate and that his interaction with NewJeans was brief and respectful.
"The K-pop motherf****rs, that don't even watch my streams, and see f**king clips out of context and make a narrative out of it. I'm getting compared to the person at the airport going through security to give Hanni a note, bro, I got backstage access, NewJeans was not the only artist I saw backstage... I did not go through security, I simply said, 'Yo! Hey!'," he stated.
Some fans argued that, despite having VIP access, Jason's approach was inappropriate and made the group uncomfortable. In response, many netizens have rallied to his defense, emphasizing the legitimacy of his access and questioning the validity of the stalking claims.
"They tried to really frame this man as a stalker creep for NO REASON," one netizen wrote on X.
Following his response, many netizens and fans have come to Jason's defense, arguing that the allegations were unfounded and that his actions were not invasive. Supporters highlighted that he had authorized access and that brief interactions with artists in such settings are common and typically harmless.
"How does a mf go see their favorite artist in concert and get called a creep. I will never understand #their logic," one fan wrote.
"Seems like people are jumping to conclusions without the full picture," another fan said.
"Kind of exhausting how people jump to villainize every fan interaction without context just because it gets more engagement than showing the actual truth," one other fan added.
"He had BACKSTAGE ACCESS because HE CALLED HIS FRIEND JAY PARK (Connections).. NEWJEANS didn't gave him any backstage access that's completely different.. AND BRO REALLY KNOCKED ON NJ DRESSING ROOM what are y'all on," one fan wrote.
"This is lowkey why people can't take k-pop fans seriously. Always beefing," another fan stated.
"Most of the kpop stans always gotta be toxic or salty. Mainly cuz their jealous for sure," one other fan added.
NewJeans wraps up their last act under ADOR
Amidst this controversy, NewJeans has been navigating significant changes in their professional landscape. The group recently terminated their contract with their agency, ADOR, citing the label's failure to protect them and fulfill contractual obligations. They announced their departure on November 28, 2024, and proceeded with contract termination on November 29.
Despite the contract termination, NewJeans claimed to continue to use their group name, leading ADOR to file a lawsuit on December 3, 2024, to verify the contract's validity. The legal battle could determine if the termination is upheld or if the group must return to ADOR or compensate the company.
In the midst of these legal proceedings, the Hype Boy girl group achieved a significant milestone by winning the "Best Digital Song" award for their track, How Sweet, at the 39th Golden Disc Awards on January 5, 2025.
At the end of their performance at the award ceremony, the group members hugged each other one last time as they wrapped up their final act under ADOR before parting.
In other news, the girl group opened up a new account on Instagram, @jeanzforfree, on December 14, 2024, on the day South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was impeached.
