President Yoon Suk-yeol's impeachment bill passed with 204 to 85 votes after 11 days of nationwide political turmoil

On December 3, 2024, President Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law, citing national security concerns and a supposed risk from anti-state forces within South Korea. This move, involving troops storming the National Assembly, sparked massive protests and swift backlash from opposition parties and civilians, prompting the removal of martial law shortly after.

Following these events, the South Korean National Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings. Opposition lawmakers accused President Yoon Suk-yeol of grossly mishandling power and violating constitutional principles. Earlier attempts to impeach Yoon—such as on December 7, 2023—failed due to insufficient votes, despite public discontent over his leadership and policies.

On December 10, Reuters reported that President Yoon Suk-yeol was subsequently placed under investigation for the unlawful use of military forces and political suppression. Authorities imposed a travel ban, intensifying the scrutiny over his administration's actions.

On December 14, the impeachment bill passed with 204 in favor to 85 against the motion. Reuters reported that Prime Minister Han Duck-soo became the interim President of South Korea on December 14, 2024, after Yoon Suk-yeol's powers were suspended. Han Duck-soo stated after the impeachment vote:

"I will give all my strength and efforts to stabilise the government."

Meanwhile, on November 28, 2024, BBC reported that NewJeans terminated their contract with ADOR—a subsidiary of HYBE—following Min Hee-jin's dispute management. The termination hasn't been finalized yet, as ADOR filed a court injunction against NewJeans for a contract breach on December 5, 2024.
