Speculation is rising over Netflix's alleged plans to expand the Squid Game universe. A viral photo claiming to show a Cinematic Universe of the hit South Korean series is fueling the rumors.

The presentation lists several potential projects: Squid Game 3 (Summer 2025), Squid Game USA (Fall 2026), Squid Game 1987 (Winter 2026), Squid Game 28th (Spring 2027), and Squid Game World (Winter 2028). This has led netizens to debate the possibility of spin-offs from the hit series, which became a global phenomenon in 2022.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk already confirmed in a press conference held at Four Seasons Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul, on August 1, 2024, that season 3 would be the final chapter.

"It’s true that Season 3 will be the finale. I’ve conveyed everything I wanted to express through this series, so continuing beyond that doesn't hold meaning for me," he stated.

However, the director did not rule out spin-offs.

"I have thought about derivative stories—what people often call side stories or spin-offs. I remember mumbling to myself, ‘Wouldn't it be fun to explore these characters’ stories?’ like a madman," he revealed.

While Netflix has not confirmed the presentation's legitimacy, the potential expansion of the Squid Game universe is generating significant buzz. As rumors swirl about the expansion of the universe, fans have had plenty to say. Online reactions are mixed, with many curious about the rumored spin-offs. One netizen commented:

"they’re trying to be hunger games so bad i can’t do this"

Fans expressed caution, noting the risk of over-saturation. Many also questioned the need for multiple versions of the series.

"can we not? not everything needs an international remake," said one netizen.
"ok they’re dtm it’s good but just needs to end after season 3 they’re dragging it on too much now," one X user wrote.
"squid game does not need a whole a** cinematic universe," read a comment on X.
"A critique on capitalism becoming such a cash grab will always be hilarious," remarked one more netizen.

However, some fans were thrilled at the idea of exploring new corners of the drama world.

"I f*cking love squid game I’m so excited," said this X user.
"Global domination incoming," added this fan.

Possible Squid Game Cinematic Universe speculation: Fan theory by Instagram user @andrewsvisual

As Squid Game continues to captivate global audiences, a new fan theory suggests an exciting future for the franchise. According to Instagram user @andrewsvisual, there may be a cinematic universe in the works featuring multiple spin-offs set in different countries and time periods.

While not officially confirmed, this theory has gained traction across various news sources, hinting at the possibility of a much larger Squid Game world.

The proposed slate includes several exciting developments, starting with season 3, which is expected to be released in the summer of 2025 with a six-episode finale on June 27, 2025, according to the user. Following that, the first confirmed spin-off is the USA version of the drama, slated for release in the fall of next year. Directed by David Fincher, this adaptation is reported to bring the deadly game to an American audience.

In winter 2025, as per @andrewsvisual, a spin-off titled Squid Game 1987 is speculated to explore the origins of the franchise. This season is expected to focus on the creation of the games and the early days of Oh II-nam (player 001 of season 1), the creator of the games. This prequel will reportedly shed light on how the notorious competition came to life.

@andrewsvisual further speculated that the addition to the series is Squid Game 28, expected in spring 2027. This spin-off would delve into the 28th iteration of the games, which the Front Man won before assuming his infamous role. It was confirmed in the original series that the Front Man participated in and won the game version 28.

The final spin-off, as per the fan theory, is a drama that centers on a worldwide version of the game, which is set for release in winter 2028, according to Instagrammer. As the title suggests, this series will take the deadly games global, expanding the competition beyond Korea into other countries.

This theory suggests that an international version of the game already exists, as hinted in season 1 when the VIPs discussed the contests held in Korea to be the best. Though the details remain speculative, these ideas are generating significant buzz among fans and could point toward an expansive future for the franchise.

On January 1, 2025, Netflix revealed the first poster and motion teaser for season 3, following the release of season 2 on December 26, 2024. The next installment is set to be released later this year.

Season 2 escalates the stakes with 45.6 billion KRW at risk, and Lee Jung-jae returns as Seong Gi-hun focuses on uncovering the dark truths behind the game. Wi Ha-joon also returns as Officer Jun-ho, still searching for his missing brother, In-ho. The new season also introduces Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, and Park Gyu-young, exploring the emotional and personal turmoil of the contestants.

The season finale leaves key questions unanswered, with Gi-hun and Jun-ho facing new challenges. With unresolved storylines and increasing brutality, season 3 is expected to explore Gi-hun's quest to stop the game, Jun-ho's investigation, and the Front Man's ultimate plans, keeping fans hooked for the conclusion.

Season 2 topped Netflix's global charts in 92 countries, including South Korea, the U.S., and Brazil, and entered the all-time Top 10 for Non-English TV shows within four days. Fans are eagerly awaiting the final season, hoping it will resolve key mysteries.
