Unmasked, starring Kim Hye-soo, Jung Sung-il, and Jung Joon-hyuk, aired episodes 1 and 2 on January 15 and 16, respectively, on Disney+. Unmasked began with a couple having an intimate moment, and finding a dead body in a public bathroom. The scene moved on to the Trigger team— an investigative reporting program that gathered outside the Haven of Trust organization with cameras.
Oh So-ryong (Kim Hye-soo) accused the organization's pastor of drugging a disabled boy, leading him to his death. One of her colleagues, Lee Sang-mok (Heo Dong-won), had a panic attack, and was transferred to the hospital. Soon, he decided to quit the job as it was taking a toll on his health.
Meanwhile, Kang Gi-ho (Jung Joon-hyuk)— associate producer— told Oh So-ryong that an anonymous post on KNS media's community forum was uploaded. The post raised allegations against the producer of Trigger of having a s*xual relationship with a colleague. She told him to not pay attention to the rumors.
As Lee Sang-mok departed, Han Do (Jung Sung-il), a rookie producer from the soap operas section, was unwillingly transferred to the Trigger team. As the pilot episode of Unmasked progressed, Han Do became a hindrance in Oh So-ryong's way, as he did not like her way of work. However, Oh So-ryong had backed up evidence that helped her expose the Haven of Trust case.
Unmasked ep 1-2 recap: Oh So-ryong and Kang Gi-ho find missing Han Do
In Unmasked episode 1, Han Do and Oh So-ryong were able to get inside the Haven of Trust premise through paragliding. They were able to collect evidence, and Oh So-ryong asked Han Do to hold on to a flower, which was also a part of the evidence. As the Haven of Trust's pastor's wife caught Oh So-ryong filming them, she asked the victims who were being physically assaulted and drugged to catch Han Do and her.
However, Oh So-ryong successfully gave the evidence to Kang Gi-ho, who was waiting outside of the organization. The police arrived and took all of them to the precinct, when Han Do filed a complaint against Oh So-ryong as he was forced to go with her and almost got hurt. After resolving the issues at the precinct, Oh So-ryong returned to the KNS media office.
Han Do also visited the office building and met current affairs manager, Son Hui-won (Park Soo-young), who convinced him to stay at the department. Oh So-ryong got into an argument with Han Do as he arrived at the Trigger team's section. Han Do told her that her working style was outdated, and she should work with methods practical in the 21st century.
He told her that he lost the flower. Oh So-ryong, on the other hand, had successfully taken the rose. The episode was finally aired through the Trigger program. By the end of Unmasked episode 1, Dr. Trigger unveiled a clip of a couple in an intimate scene, with the woman wearing a ring. Oh So-ryong also had a similar ring in her drawer.
In Unmasked episode 2, Oh So-ryong opened a case of a missing person. She went to the office to congratulate the president, Koo Hyeong-tae, of the company. Koo Hyeong-tae, however, was rude to her, and told her to find Dr. Trigger before him, or the Trigger program would be canceled. Oh So-ryong and Han Do got into another argument, as the latter began his first day at the department.
Later in Unmasked episode 2, Oh So-ryong received a call from a police station. She rushed to the station and learned that Han Do was wrongfully accused of being a serial street cat killer by a convenience store owner. Oh So-ryong was able to resolve the issue, and Han Do was free to go. As Han Do reached home, he got a traumatic flashback from his childhood where his father hit him on his finger with a hammer.
The next day, a cat was killed by the serial killer, and Han Do saw the body and was furious. He tried filing a complaint with the police, but they could not help him. Han Do went to the office and wrote a news pitch. Surprisingly, Kang Gi-ho and Han Do's news pitches were the same.
The current affairs manager, Son Hui-won, called a meeting after hearing the two argue. Son Hui-won asked Kang Gi-ho to assist Han Do in this project, and insulted him for coming from an unknown college. This offended Oh So-ryong and Kang Gi-ho. Oh So-ryong stood up for his team member against Son Hui-won.
Later, Han Do met a teenage boy, Go-eo (Moon Woo-jin), who showed him a video of an old man burning the cat's dead body. The boy claimed that he got the video from his female friend. Han Do moved solo on this case and went to the old man's house. As Han Do reached, he received a call from Kang Gi-ho. Han Do gave Go-eo's contact to Kang Gi-ho and asked him to get an interview with him and hung up.
Han Do moved forward clumsily and broke his phone. At the old man's house, Han Do learned that Go-eo was the serial killer, who wore a wig and filmed the old man. Go-eo disguised himself as a girl and also threatened him.
Kang Gi-ho panicked as he could not contact Han Do or Go-eo, so he informed Oh So-ryong. Soon, with her team, she tracked down Han Do and lashed out at him for working alone. She ordered him to stick with Kang Gi-oh all the time.
As the Unmasked episode 2 progressed, Go-eo was seen wearing the wig and approaching a kid. Furthermore, Han Do, at the office washroom, heard Hwang Jin-woo talk to a woman on call, telling her that it was a one-night stand, and he appeared to be flustered when the woman mentioned having evidence. Notably, Oh So-ryong had previously accepted Hwang Jin-woo's marriage proposal.
The Unmasked episode 2 ended with one of the Haven of Trust followers throwing a fire extinguisher and tear gas in the office.
Unmasked is available on Wednesdays and Thursdays on Disney+.
