On December 12, 2024, YTN News interviewed Kim Hee-won, the director of the ongoing Disney+ Korean limited series, Light Shop, via live coverage. The livestream was covered by the YouTube channel @letmetakeyouhere, and parts of the interview went viral on X.
Ahead of the series finale, director Kim Hee-won shared insights into the creative choices behind the episodic structure and offered a spoiler about the emotional journey awaiting fans.
In a recent interview, Kim Hee-won explained that each episode of Light Shop was designed to embody a distinct genre, creating a unique viewing experience. He shared that episode 1 introduced viewers to the world of "mystery" and suspense. He added that episode 2 explored eerie supernatural encounters. The director further said that episode 3 shifted into high-octane action, while episode 4 incorporated twists that left audiences reeling.
Released on December 11, 2024, episodes 5 and 6 served as a bridge, tying together earlier narratives and laying the groundwork for the final act. Kim Hee-won revealed that the last two episodes, 7 and 8, will focus on “human drama and emotions,” promising a deeply resonant conclusion.
"The first episode was a mystery thriller and the second one is horror. So I made it with three episodes as an active play. And episode 4 has twists. That's where we ended up. Then episode 5 was bridge. Six, seven, and eight episodes were human drama. We thought about this before making them. Rather than a specific genre, we wanted to make it easier for people," he said.
Disney+ Korean limited series Light Shop: Plot, characters, and what has happened till Episode 6
Light Shop follows the story of Jung Woo-young, portrayed by Ju Ji-hoon, the enigmatic owner of a mysterious shop that acts as a liminal space between the worlds of the living and the dead. Customers who enter the shop seek closure, whether it’s confronting their deepest regrets or reconnecting with loved ones they’ve lost.
These customers are called "strangers" and are actual souls or ghosts of those who are either on the precipice of dying or have already been dead.
The cast features a stellar lineup, including Park Bo-young as Kwon Young-ji, a nurse in charge of taking care of the patients who are in a coma after a fatal bus accident.
Meanwhile, Lee Jung-eun plays Yu-hee, a mother with a tragic backstory who sends her daughter to the light shop every day to purchase a light bulb; and Seolhyun portrays Lee Ji-young, a ghost. She dies a tragic death after her partner (Uhm Tae-goo) gets in a coma due to a bus accident.
The series, penned by renowned webtoon writer Kang Full and directed by Kim Hee-won, balances the shift in its genre while maintaining a cohesive storyline. Light Shop’s ability to weave supernatural elements with emotional depth has drawn comparisons to previous works like Hotel Del Luna and Moving.
In the interview, director Kim Hee-won hinted that episodes 7 and 8 will deliver an emotionally charged narrative, focusing on the choices characters must make to find peace. Over the first six episodes, Light Shop has unraveled gripping mysteries while posing existential questions.
Episode 1 sets the tone with Won-young's (Ju Ji-hoon) shop’s eerie ambiance and him instructing Hyun-ju (Shin Eun-soo) to never look at a stranger/ghost's way. Episode 2 introduces chilling ghostly phenomena, hinting at the darker forces at play.
By episode 3, the narrative shifts to other lead characters like the backstory of Seon-ha (Kim Min-ah) and Hyun-ju meeting a ghost. Episode 4 stuns the audiences with plot twists, revealing that some characters believed to be alive might already be dead.
Episodes 5 and 6 delves deeper into the shop’s origins and the personal stakes of its visitors. It is revealed that Won-young harbors his own secrets, including a connection to the afterlife that complicates his role as the shop’s guardian.
The episodes also explores Detective Sung-sik (Bae Seong-woo) growing determination to uncover the truth, leading to a revelation of Won-young's supernatural being.
Light Shop episodes 7 and 8 will air globally on December 18, 2024, on Disney+.
