NewJeans, which is a wordplay on “new genes,” is the group name of the popular Korean girl group consisting of Haerin, Minji, Hyein, Hanni, and Danielle. The group’s music and fashion favor the early 2000s period with an added touch of the youthfulness and energy of the new generation.

NewJeans debut single, Attention, released in July 2022, and their subsequent Hype Boy and Cookie singles, shot them into international stardom, with peak positions on international charts. The HYBE label group gained momentum in just a year of their debut and this could be attributed to their artistic direction and redefinition of the typical girl group sound.

NewJeans' musical journey and some major highlights

The quintet was formed by ADOR, a sub-label of the renowned entertainment company, HYBE Corporation, and made a surprise debut with their hit single, Attention in July 2022. The music video for the song was released without any promotion or a previous group concept, a rare occurrence for a K-pop group.

The track Attention, which combines elements of early 2000s R&B and pop, debuted at number one on the Billboard South Korea chart and the Circle Digital chart, while also grabbing the 54th spot on the Billboard Global 200 chart.

The K-pop girl group released their debut eponymous Extended Play in August 2022, which featured Attention, Hype Boy, and Cookie. The EP ranked among Rolling Stone’s best albums of 2022 and won the award for Best K-pop Album at the Korean Music Awards. Their pop track, Hype Boy, became the longest-running song by a female K-pop act on the Billboard Global 200.

Following the success of their debut EP, their first single album, OMG, was released in January 2023, featuring a lead single, of the same name and Ditto. Ditto became the group’s first song on the Billboard Hot 100 and theUK Singles chart. The popular track also held a record as the longest-running number-one song on the Circle Digital Chart.

In March 2023, the group became the fastest Korean act to reach a billion streams on Spotify in just 219 days of debut. NewJeans released their second EP, Get Up in July 2023. Get Up is composed of six tracks that explore R&B as well as dance styles characterized by synthesizers and lively beats.

The EP debuted second place on the Circle Album chart and became the second-most-sold album by a female K-pop act with 1.65 million copies sold within its first week. Get Up also peaked on the US Billboard 200 and appeared on year-end lists by Rolling Stone and British GQ amongst others.

The lead single, Super Shy, charted higher than all their previous singles on the Billboard Global 200, the Billboard Hot 100, and the UK Singles chart. NewJeans performed at the American music festival Lollapalooza, in August 2023, becoming the first K-Pop girl group to achieve this feat, performing Super Shy and other songs from the Get Up EP.

The K-pop group won the coveted Artist of the Year and Song of the Year Awards at the Melon Music Awards and MAMA Awards in 2023.

Their second single album, How Sweet, was released in May 2024 and features tracks, How Sweet and Bubble Gum. The single album debuted at number 1 in South Korea and 15 on the Billboard Global 200.

They followed up in June 2024, with the release of Supernatural and Right Now, their first releases in Japanese. Supernatural peaked at number 7 on the Japan Hot 100 and number 2 on the US World Digital Song Sales chart.

NewJeans was also named Billboard’s Women in Music Group of the Year for 2024. Speaking to Billboard in 2024, on their music and achievements alongside her group mates, Danielle said:

"Every time we release new music, we wonder if people are going to enjoy it just as much as we do. To see people out there jamming to our songs, it puts a really big smile on our faces."
