The inaugural episode introduces viewers to Gong Ryong (Lee Min-ho), an obstetrician-gynecologist who embarks on a journey as a space tourist. His venture to the space station is not merely for leisure; he harbors a concealed agenda that adds layers of intrigue to his character.

Concurrently, When the Stars Gossip episode 1 introduces Commander Eve Kim (Gong Hyo-jin), a Korean-American astronaut who has recently assumed her role as the mission commander on the space station.

Eve is portrayed as a perfectionist with a strict adherence to protocols, ensuring that every aspect of the mission operates seamlessly.

First encounter sparks chemistry in space: When the Stars Gossip debuts with a bang

When the Stars Gossip episode 1 begins with Gong Ryong's arrival at the space station, where he is greeted by the crew. His presence as a civilian among professional astronauts raises questions, especially given the rigorous selection process for space tourists.

The narrative hints at his ulterior motives, subtly suggesting that his journey is intertwined with personal vendettas and complex relationships back on Earth.

A pivotal moment occurs when Gong Ryong experiences a medical emergency due to the space environment's physiological challenges.

Due to the velocity and the ship's compact inner surroundings, Gong Ryong gets motion sickness and hurls out. Although having been warned by Eve and Commander Santi (Alex Hafner) about the potential danger of vomiting in the cockpit, Gong Ryong further panics and chokes on his own vomit, and passes out.

Commander Eve Kim's swift intervention not only saves him but also establishes an initial connection between the two characters. This incident serves as a catalyst for their evolving relationship, setting the tone for the romantic elements of the series.

The episode also delves into Gong Ryong's backstory, revealing his tumultuous relationship with his fiancée, Go-eun, the daughter of Chairman Choi, a powerful conglomerate leader and Korea's chaebol.

In a flashback, it is seen that Go-eun's car crashes into Gong Ryong as she is intoxicated. Gong Ryong calmly handles the situation despite bleeding from his forehead.

Go-eun walks out of her car and Gong Ryong notices that she is bleeding between her legs. He immediately understands that she is pregnant and is going through a miscarriage due to the accident. He rushes Go-eun to his hospital and operates on her with her consent.

Following this personal tragedy, Chairman Choi (Go-eun's father and the owner of the MZ organization) holds Gong Ryong responsible, leading to professional sabotage and personal vendettas.

Chairman Choi blames him for operating on Go-eun and aborting her child—the future successor of the MZ organization.

Chairman Choi makes sure that Gong Ryong is fired from his hospital and would never get another job anywhere in South Korea. Gong Ryong's decision to become a space tourist appears to be a strategic move in his complex relationship with Go-eun and her influential father.

The episode intricately portrays the dynamics between the main characters in When the Stars Gossip:

  • Gong Ryong: A skilled OB-GYN with a mysterious agenda, his journey to the space station is motivated by personal and professional conflicts. Lee Min-ho's portrayal adds depth to a character torn between ambition and emotion.
  • Eve Kim: As the newly appointed mission commander, she embodies discipline and dedication. Her interaction with Gong Ryong introduces a personal dimension to her otherwise professional demeanor.
  • Go-eun: Although her presence in this episode is through flashbacks and references, her influence on Gong Ryong's decisions is evident. Her past relationship with Kang-su (Oh Jung-se), now aboard the space station, adds complexity to the narrative.
  • Kang-su: Aboard the space station and closely connected to Chairman Choi, his history with Go-eun and his intentions towards Gong Ryong introduce elements of rivalry and tension.
