The single made an immediate impact, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, replacing BTS’ own Butter. This achievement marked the group’s fifth Hot 100 topper in under a year, a feat that cemented their status as global chart-toppers. Beyond Billboard, the track received widespread recognition for its uplifting theme and choreography, resonating with fans worldwide.

In September 2021, BTS became the first Korean group to film a music video and perform at the United Nations. During their address as South Korea’s Special Presidential Envoys for Future Generations and Culture, the group performed Permission to Dance in the UN General Assembly Hall.

The act was in line with "Keeping the Promise of the Sustainable Development Goals" of the band's and the United Nations' initiative. The United Nations posted the music video on their official YouTube channel.

The song’s accolades extend beyond the Billboard charts and BRIT certification. Permission to Dance has been a significant part of the K-pop group’s global tours and campaigns. The track’s success also contributed to the K-pop group receiving triple-platinum certification in Japan, reflecting its massive streaming and sales numbers in the region.

Over the years, the group has made history with numerous achievements. They have graced the cover of TIME magazine as "Entertainer of the Year," delivered a speech at the White House to combat anti-Asian hate, and partnered with UNICEF for their "Love Myself" campaign.

The group also holds several Billboard Music Awards, American Music Awards, and the MTV Video Music Awards— being the first K-pop/Korean act in multiple categories to win the laurels. They are also the first and only Korean act to earn multiple Grammy nominations.

In June 2022, the group announced a temporary hiatus as the members pursued solo projects and prepared for mandatory military service. Jin, the group’s eldest member, enlisted in December 2022 and returned in June 2024, followed by J-hope in April 2023, who came back in October 2024.

The group is expected to reunite after all members complete their service, with Jungkook, Jimin, Taehyung, Namjoon, and Suga anticipated to conclude their enlistment by June 2025.
