Sniper movies have been going strong for 30 years, with the latest film from the franchise, its tenth installment, releasing in September last year. Most of them are available for streaming via Prime Video and Netflix.

From the OG sharpshooter Thomas Beckett (played by Tom Berenger) to his legacy and fictional son Brandon Beckett (played by Chad Michael Collins), Sniper movies have carved a name for themselves with their high-stakes missions set across different landscapes worldwide.

Their blend of captivating portrayals of tense sniping sequences, tactical intrigue, and evolving character dynamics all contributed to the franchise's lasting charm. With ten movies from the Sniper universe, we've ranked them according to their ratings/IMDb scores.

Ten Sniper movies, best-rated films from the franchise

1) Sniper (1993)

The OG movie, which has a 6.1 IMDb rating, is the best to come out of the franchise. It introduced Master Gunnery Sergeant Tom Beckett (Berenger) to the action movie scene, which, at the time of its release, was a fresh take on the classic action film plot of killing as many people as possible.

It has both powerful depictions of violence and a distinct narrative paired with strong performances from the cast, mainly from Berenger's character and his inexperienced sharpshooting partner slash spotter Richard Miller (played by Billy Zane).

The storyline follows their unlikely pair in the jungles of Panama as they take on a politician and a rebel leader.

2) Sniper: Ultimate Kill (2017)

The seventh chapter from the Sniper movies, which has a 5.6 IMDb rating, is the first time in the series the OG sharpshooter-spotter duo joined its legacy, which is a bonus for long-time fans of Sniper movies.

Ultimate Kill combines no-frills sniper action with Berenger and Zane's reunion with the new-gen sniper and Berenger's character's son Brandon Beckett (Collins). They team up to kill a veteran assassin and take down a drug cartel in Colombia, also with the help of a federal agent.

3) Sniper: Reloaded (2011)

After three Sniper movies where the storyline centered around the famed sniper Thomas Beckett, the fourth installment of the series, Sniper: Reloaded, now focuses on his son Marine Sgt. Brandon Beckett. The new storyline and cast, with its 5.4 IMDb rating, was enough of a hit to join the top five films from the franchise.

There was also a lot of excitement about this reboot slash sequel, as it came out around seven years after the third Sniper movie. While Berenger isn't in it, Zane is, which is a not-so-far-off transition to Collins taking the series over.

In Reloaded, Collins's character tracks down the sniper who ambushed his team while they were on a mission in the Congo, seeking revenge for his dead comrades.

Ghost Shooter, which has a 5.4 IMDb rating, is the sixth chapter in the series and is laden with intense action sequences, and much of it is because of the storyline where two of the best snipers in the business, Brandon Beckett and Miller, is pitted against a ghost sniper.

Fighting against a deadly terrorist sniper who seems to know where they are at all times makes this movie a non-stop action-packed experience for viewers.

5) Sniper: Assassin's End (2020)

The eighth installment in the series, which has a 5.4 IMDb score, reunites Berenger and Collins's characters on the silver screen.

It once again follows the Special Ops Sniper Brandon Beckett but not as the hero in the story. Instead, he becomes the prime suspect in a high-profile killing, and as authorities try to hunt him down, he returns to his roots — his father — for help.

Besides the classic sniping action Sniper movies are known for, Assasin's End also brings a tense narrative of justice and survival.

In the fifth installment of the franchise, which has a 5.3 IMDb rating, the plot delivers action while also exploring familiar relationships, adding emotional depth and unique flavor to the script.

It's a bait-and-switch plot where Collins' Brandon tracks his father's killer after hearing that he's one of the several military leaders assassinated only to find that his father is held captive but alive and that he was being used as bait all along.

The second movie from the franchise, which has a 5.2 IMDb rating, may not have made it to the top five Sniper movies, but it has its unique flavor. The movie's strength lies in its heart-pounding action as Thomas Beckett teams up with Jake Cole (played by Bokeem Woodbine), who is a death-row sniper.

As they finish the assassination of a repressive terrorist leader, an easy job for two pro snipers, they find that escaping the scene is more difficult than they had first thought.

8) Sniper 3 (2004)

The third installment unveils conspiracies within the force and the dark history of Beckett's previous sniping missions.
