10 Things I Hate About You came out in 1999, and 25 years later, the comedy flick starring fresh-faced Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger still hasn't lost its magic. The modern-day Shakespearean tale based on The Taming of the Shrew follows the lives of the Stratford sisters Kat (played by Stiles) and Bianca (played by Larisa Oleynik) and the ups and downs of high school love and relationships.
In the film, Bianca isn't allowed to date until her older sister, Kat, does. However, unlike Bianca, who is popular and friendly, Kat is known for having a strong and independent personality. When a new student, Cameron, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, fancies himself in love with Bianca, his friend tells him to pay someone to date Kat so he can have a chance with Bianca.
But he doesn't have the money for it, so he and his friend tell Joey, played by Joey Donner, about the "plan." Joey then recruits the rebellious Patrick, played by Ledger, to date Kat. As Patrick starts to break through Kat's tough exterior, she finds out about the whole gimmick.
Heartfelt scenes unfold in this enemies-to-lovers movie as the characters explore the complexities of teenage love and the importance of staying true to themselves. In the end, Kat and Patrick reconcile after she recites her emotional 10 Things I Hate About You poem, and he surprises her with a guitar.
How did Kat learn about Patrick's lies and deception about dating her?
It didn't matter that Patrick had already backed out of his deal with Joey. After taking care of Kat after she had too many tequila shots during a party, he tells Joey that he wants out and that he should stop paying him to date Kat.
But like any wrongdoing, like Patrick accepting Joey's money for dating Kat, it bites him in the end. While Kat and Patrick are dancing at prom, Joey confronts Patrick about Bianca being with Cameron, saying:
"I didn't pay you to take out Kat, so some little punk could snake me with Bianca."
Kat, who was nearby, hears everything and realizes that Patrick's pursuit of her had all been nothing but an elaborate plot. She then walks out of the scene, and while Patrick follows her out to explain, they end up in a heated argument with Kat, saying that she had always thought that everything was a set-up.
Patrick admits to her that he didn't care about the money, he only cared about her. But at that point in 10 Things I Hate About You, Kat is so hurt and doesn't believe anything he tells her.

Did Kat forgive Patrick's whole gimmick around dating her in 10 Things I Hate About You?
Before the reveal at the prom, Kat and Patrick become inseparable. They go on dates, have meaningful conversations, share kisses, and rest in each other's arms. At one point, he serenades Kat with his version of the song in the movie, Can't Take My Eyes Off You, during her soccer practice. As for Kat, she gets Patrick out of detention after he is chased down by security for his "grand gesture."
Then, prom arrives, and they are enjoying the music on the dance floor just before Kat learns the whole gimmick about Patrick only dating her because Joey paid him. She doesn't want anything to do with the lies and deception, going back to her old ways of staying away from other people. While her sister's love story continues, Kat is now more focused on college and her future.
But while Kat was hurt by Patrick's deceit, there was still a place in her heart for him. She might have been in pain, but her feelings for Patrick mean that she can't hate him, something that she voices out while reciting her 10 Things I Hate About You poem.
In the poem, she outlines all the things that she hates about Patrick, including the way he talks to her or the way he cuts his hair. She also expresses that she hates how he makes her laugh, but she hates it more when he makes her cry. Teary-eyed, she ends the poem, saying:
"But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you. Not even close. Not even a little bit. Not even at all."
The poem is what inspired the title 10 Things I Hate About You. It was a vulnerable way to share Kat's feelings, and as for Patrick, he wasn't about to give up the girl he learned to love. When Kat goes to her car after school, she finds the Fender Strat guitar Patrick bought for her using the money Joey paid him.
In the final scene of 10 Things I Hate About You, they reconcile and kiss, but Kat interrupts it by saying that he can't just buy her a guitar every time he screws up. In response, Patrick jokingly says that there are other musical instruments he can buy for her in the future.

Who did Kat's sister Bianca end up with at the end of 10 Things I Hate About You?
At the beginning of 10 Things I Hate About You, Bianca is smitten with Joey's popular, cool guy attitude. She spends time with him despite her older sister telling her not to. Meanwhile, she treats Cameron like a friend and even calls him the wrong name sometimes.
But, as time goes by, she starts to see through Joey's facade and realizes how shallow the guy is. He talks about himself a lot and is vain, and at the house party, he goes away with another girl to another party as Bianca couldn't go with him because she has a curfew. Left alone at the party, he asked Cameron if he could drive her home.
While Cameron is slightly reluctant and hurt because he thinks Bianca only likes Joey, he does give her a ride home. Once there, he goes off on Bianca about her being selfish and about everything he did to be closer to her, prompting the girl to kiss him.
At the end of 10 Things I Hate About You, Bianca goes with Cameron to prom. The final nail in the coffin about any possibility of her being with Joey is squashed when she throws a punch, hitting his nose, and kneeing him at prom after learning about him paying someone to date her sister. Meanwhile, she shares a kiss with Cameron.
