Released in April 2009, 17 Again is a teen-fantasy comedy directed by Burr Steers. The movie follows the life of a 17-year-old teenager, Mike O’Donnell, who finds out that his girlfriend, Scarlet Porter, is pregnant. This leads to him giving up a pro basketball career and a college scholarship.
Now, 20 years later, he lives a stagnant life and is fired from his job while dealing with a divorce with Scarlet. However, a chance encounter with a stranger near a bridge transforms him back to his 17-year-old self. This gives him another shot at the formative years of his life. The official synopsis reads:
“Mike O'Donnell is ungrateful for how his life turned out. He gets a chance to rewrite his life when he tried to save a janitor near a bridge and jumped after him into a time vortex.”
In addition to a hilarious setup, 17 Again also boasts of a stellar cast, including top stars such as Zac Efron and the late Matthew Perry.
17 Again stars Zac Efron, Matthew Perry, and Leslie Mann
1) Zac Efron as Mike O'Donnell (Teen)
First and foremost, Zac Efron plays the younger version of the protagonist of 17 Again, Mike O’Donnell. Efron plays a college hunk, a basketball player who is popular in his high school. This is also when he ends up falling in love with Scarlet.
Efron’s character is trapped in his 17-year-old body as he attempts to rechart his life and win back Scarlet. The High School Musical actor has been involved in a range of major movies ever since, including Triple Play and The Guardian.
2) Matthew Perry as Mike O'Donnell (Adult)
FRIENDS star Matthew Perry played the role of the adult Mike O’Donnell. The adult version of the character is shown to have lost his way and is undergoing a difficult divorce with Scarlet.
However, once he is turned back to 17, Mike struggles to get his life back together and convince his wife and family that he is indeed the same man. Perry passed due to a ketamine overdose last year. Mann's character is then seen getting convinced by her husband as the two eventually rekindle their relationship. Just like the other two major stars, Mann has also been a major name in Hollywood and has starred in projects such as The 40-year-old Virgin and Knocked Up.
