The Deliverance is a supernatural horror film directed by Lee Daniels and was released on August 16, 2024. David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum co-wrote the film's screenplay, inspired by the real-life events of the Ammons haunting case in 2011. It stars Andra Day, Glenn Close, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Mo'Nique, among others, in lead roles.
The film's logline on Netflix reads:
"A woman moves her family to a new home for a fresh start — but something evil already lives there. A Lee Daniels film inspired by terrifying true events."
Us, The Exorcist, and other films to watch after The Deliverance
1) The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
Scott Derrickson's supernatural legal drama is loosely based on the exorcism of a German woman named Anneliese Michel, in the 1960s. In the film, the 19-year-old Emily Rose is suspected of being possessed by evil spirits, leading to her exorcism at the hands of Father Moore. However, she ultimately dies, and Father Moore is charged with and found guilty of negligent homicide.
Similar to The Deliverance, The Exorcism of Emily Rose tackles themes of demonic possession, exorcism, and its effect on loved ones. The movie features an ensemble cast of Laura Linney, Tom Wilkinson, Campbell Scott, and Jennifer Carpenter, among others.
2) The Conjuring (2013)
James Wan's The Conjuring tells the story of the Perron family's haunting through the lens of paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga).
The film centers around the family of Roger and Carolyn Perron. Along with their five daughters, they move into a farmhouse in Rhode Island in 1971. Soon after, they begin experiencing a series of disturbing events caused by an evil spirit named Bathsheba. By the end of the movie, the Warrens succeed in the exorcism of Carolyn and banishing the evil spirit forever.
Both The Conjuring and The Deliverance are based on real-life supernatural events taking place in haunted houses. The two movies showcase the effects of paranormal activities on the family.
3) Us (2019)
Jordan Peele wrote and directed the psychological thriller Us, starring Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, and Tim Heidecker, among others. The film takes an intriguing look into a family's struggle to maintain their existence, much like The Deliverance.
Lupita Nyong'o stars as the matriarch Adelaide 'Addy' Wilson, whose life is turned upside down after her family is viciously attacked by a group of doppelgängers, called the 'Tethered.' In their bid to untether themselves from their counterparts, they unravel a dark secret where nothing seems as it is.
4) The Babadook (2014)
The Babadook, written and directed by Jennifer Kent, is a critically acclaimed psychological thriller. Like The Deliverance, the 2014 film depicts the complex dynamic between a mother and her possessed child.
In the film, the babadook is a top-hat-wearing children's book monster that comes to possess the protagonist Amelia Vanek's son, Sam. In an interview with The Guardian, Kent mentioned that the monster is a metaphor for Amelia's (Essie Davis) mental health issues, and the story centers around her attempts to mend her fraught relationship with Sam (Noah Wiseman).
5) The Exorcist (1973)
William Friedkin's cult classic The Exorcist recounts the terrifying story of a 12-year-old girl possessed by demons and her subsequent exorcism. Ellen Burstyn stars as Chris MacNeil, while Linda Blair plays her possessed daughter, Regan MacNeil. The two Catholic priests, Father Karras and Father Merrin, who save her are played by Jason Miller and Max von Sydow respectively.
The Exorcist and The Deliverance share similar themes, particularly in their exploration of spiritual warfare, the battle between good and evil, and the impact of demonic forces on individuals and communities.
The Deliverance has been available on Netflix since August 30, 2024.
