1) Scarface
Scarface is a crime drama film from the house of Universal Pictures. Directed by Brian de Palma, the screenplay for the film is written by Oliver Stone with an inspiration taken from Armitage Trail's 1930 novel of the same name. It is a remake of Howard Hawks' 1932 gangster film, Scarface: The Shame of the Nation.
The cast features Al Pacino, Steven Bauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Robert Loggia and others in pivotal roles. While the violence and profanity attracted criticism initially, Scarface has attained the status of a cult classic over the years. It is even considered among the greatest gangster films ever made.
The movie tells the story of Tony Montana, a Cuban immigrant in 1980s Miami. It follows his meteoric rise to become the kingpin of Miami's drug trade, and his eventual burning crash through his unhinged and violent lifestyle.
2) Ocean's Eleven
Ocean's Eleven is a crime thriller comedy offering from the house of Warner Bros. Pictures. Steven Soderbergh directed the film with a screenplay written by Ted Griffin. Released in theaters in 2001, it marks the remake of Lewis Milestone's 1960 heist film, Ocean's 11.
The film features an ensemble cast including the likes of George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Don Cheadle, Casey Affleck and others. It is a huge commercially successful film that kicked off a trilogy series in the 2000s along with a spin-off film in 2018.
The film unfolds the story of a group of thieves and conmen. They meticulously plan and execute the robbery of three of the largest casinos across Las Vegas on a single night.
3) The Thing
The Thing is a sci-fi horror film that released in theaters in 1982 by Universal Pictures. The film is directed by John Carpenter with a screenplay penned by Bill Lancaster. It is based on John W. Campbell Jr.'s 1938 novella, Who Goes There?. The novella had already inspired a previous movie titled The Thing from Another World by Christian Nyby in 1951, making the 1982 film a remake.
The cast features Kurt Russell, Keith David, Wilford Brimley, T. K. Carter and others in noticeable roles throughout the film. The film was not received very well by the audience or critics, who only found praise for its special effects. However, over the years, it has become a cult classic title considered to be among the best sci-fi horrors out there.
Set in the harsh climates of Antartica, The Thing revolves around a group of American researchers who are infiltrated by a shape-shifting alien of unknown origins. The film uses elements of paranoia and mistrust to create an environment of fear of the unknown. The makers also released its prequel under the same name in 2011.
4) The Departed
The Departed is an epic crime thriller from the house of Warner Bros. Pictures. This project is directed by Martin Scorsese with William Monahan as the screenplay writer. Released in 2006, this remake of 2002 Hong Kong action thriller, Internal Affairs, draws inspiration from Boston's notorious Winter Hill Gang.
At the time of release, it was a massive commercial and critical success, winning numerous accolades including four Academy Awards and a Golden Globe. The cast includes Leoardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Vera Farmiga and more.
Set in Boston, The Departed shows the cat-and-mouse story of two moles as they try to uncover each other's identity. While one works for the Irish mob, the other works for the state police - two entities at war with each other.
5) Dune
Dune is an epic sci-fi film series distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Denis Villeneuve directed the titles while working with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth on the screenplay for the film. Based on Frank Herbert's 1965 novel of the same name, it is a remake of David Lynch's 1984 film adaptation and John Harrison's 2000 miniseries.
Villeneuve has released a two part adaptation of the novel till date, with a sequel under development.
