4DX technology has revolutionized the cinema-going experience since its inception in 2009. Korean Company CJ CJV developed this 4D film presentation system; since 2013, 4DX cinemas have expanded around the globe.
CJ has partnerships with popular theatre chains like Wanda Cinemas, Cinepolis, Cineworld, Regal Cinemas, Kinepolis, Event Cinemas and Village Cinemas, among others.
4DX theatres enhance cinematic experiences by incorporating real motion and sensory effects like moving chairs, wind and water effects, strobe lights, etc. These effects perfectly blend with some films, especially those in the action and fantasy genres.
While audiences can enjoy films in 4DX theatres, it's interesting to wonder which past films would have benefitted from the 4DX film presentation system. We look at five such films.
Five films that should have been released in 4DX
1) Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Gore Verbinski's action-adventure fantasy film was released in the golden period of visual and practical effects.
The success and ambition of films like Jurassic Park and Titanic propelled other studios and filmmakers to go berserk with their imagination and push the envelope of celluloid.
In such a period, the Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom-starring swashbuckler gave fans an epic pirate film to remember for ages. The engaging story of peculiar characters with their constant running, jumping, swordfighting and ship warfare, would have been elevated in 4DX format.
2) Inception (2010)
Directed by the Academy Award-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan and starring heavyweights like Leonardo di Caprio, Joseph Gorden Levitt, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard and Elliot Page, Inception is among the most discussed films of the century. The film is often compared to The Matrix in terms of its filmmaking finess and conceptual depth.
Apart from the acting and writing, Inception also boasts some spectacular sequences that would perfectly blend with the new theatres. The hallway fight sequence of the film, which is a practical effects marvel, couldn't find a better companion to indulge audiences at the moment.
3) 2012 (2009)
The 2009 sci-fi disaster film was among the most talked about films of its time. One of the prime reasons behind its popularity and success was the '2012 phenomenon,' a belief that emerged out of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar of Mayan civilization.
The calendar regarded December 21, 2012, as the last date of a 5,126-year-long cycle, which some conspiracy theorists speculated would be the end of the world. The world didn't end, but the hype gave us an epic film that showcased deadly earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, megatsunamis and a global flood. The intensity of those scenes would have magnified manifold in a 4DX theatre.
4) King Kong (2005)
King Kong is a 2005 retelling of the classic 1933 Hollywood film with Andy Serkis as the King of the Beasts who falls in love with a young performer Ann Darrow, played by Naomi Watts.
After bringing Tolkien's world to life in his Lord of the Rings trilogy, Peter Jackson used his newly equipped technological prowess to construct an epic drama filled with heart, emotions and visual spectacle.
The Kong vs Lizards action sequence made people's jaws drop in the theatre. One can only imagine how the experience would have been with the new technology. Considering that Lord of the Rings has already been screened in 4DX this year, there might be a chance that fans could experience King Kong the same way someday.
5)The Avengers (2012)
The Avengers solidified the notion that we are living in a superhero films-dominated era. The film was the epic conclusion of phase one of the MCU and brought all the heroes from the earlier films together.
It's unclear why the film wasn't released in 4DX despite the availability of technology at that time. The epic action sequences of the film are certainly meant to be experienced in a motion chair with the wind blowing and water splashing, while the background score ignites the hero within us.
