Kirat Assi, a UK resident, who was a victim of catfishing for several years, is the subject of Netflix's latest documentary Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare. It will arrive on the streamer on October 16, 2024.
This docuseries intends to make more netizens aware of the catfishing scams, that can take a toll on a person mentally, physically, and emotionally. The same was the case with Kirat Assi, who met her online lover Bobby on Facebook. After chatting with him for years, she learned that she was talking to a fake profile impersonating Bobby.
When Assi involved the police in this matter, after discovering the truth, her distant cousin Simran Bhogal confessed to her that she was the one impersonating Bobby. However, no charges were pressed against Simran, as catfishing is not considered a crime in the UK.

1) Kirat and Bobby were in a long-distance relationship for years and it even turned se*ual
As per reports by Daily Mail, Kirat and Bobby who met online in 2010, via Facebook, became close friends over the years. When their friendship turned into an online relationship in 2015, the couple would spend even more time calling each other throughout the night. Kirat also used to sleep listening to Bobby's breath on the phone. Kirat also claimed that she sent na*ed pictures to Bobby in the course of their online relationship.
2) The profiles of Bobby's 50 relatives and family members were all fraudulent
After Kirat Assi realized that she had been a victim of long-term catfishing, she also discovered that the other 50 profiles of people impersonating Bobby’s relatives, friends, and acquaintances were also fake.
3) Bobby faked his death many times
Reportedly, Assi got a message in November 2013, that said that Bobby was shot fatally, had memory loss, and was in a coma. I’m 2014 Assi learned that her online lover was dead. However, in the coming days, Assi again got an email, which said that Bobby was alive and was part of a witness protection program.
In 2015, Kirat Assi once more learned that Bobby suffered a brain tumor and also a stroke.
4) Kirat Assi had met the real Bobby earlier in 2012
As per reports by Daily Mail, Kirat in 2011 met the real Bobby in a nightclub. Bobby however did not seem to recognise Kirat and his behaviour was cold.
Kirat previously recalled this encounter with Bobby and revealed that,
'It was a hen night, and I was not expecting him to be there, but I recognised him from his Facebook picture. I went up and introduced myself. He seemed really vague. I thought he might have had a few drinks. The music was quite loud . . . maybe he couldn't really hear me. It was weird.'
Kirat would have discovered she was a victim of catfishing long ago if she had been forced to confront Bobby that very night.
5) Kirat Assi confronted the real Bobby in 2018
In 2018, when Kirat wanted to meet her online lover and wanted to know more about him, she hired a private detective for the same. When Simran went to the real Bobby’s Brighton home, she became sure that she was a victim of catfishing.
When she knocked at Bobby’s door and said 'Hi', he replied by saying:
'I don't know who you are.'
