Henry Cavill, aka Superman or Geralt of Rivia, has become an icon on television and films for many years. The British actor has effortlessly slipped into many different roles to solidify his status as an accomplished Hollywood star, apart from his strapping physique, intense blue eyes and nerdy penchant.
Besides the iconic DC superhero or the legendary witcher, he has played Sherlock Holmes in Enola Holmes movies, the super cool spy Napoleon Solo in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and many more.
While he's known for the roles portrayed on the silver screen, there are many other things fans may not know about the actor, including the box office roles he almost bagged and his hobbies.
Five little-known facts about Henry Cavill
1) He missed Zach Snyder's call about him getting the Superman role because he was busy playing World of Warcraft
Most fans know that Cavill is an avid gamer, but some might have missed the fact that he was so into gaming that he missed Zack Snyder's call. The director was supposed to tell him that he would star in Man of Steel.
He famously recounted the event to GQ in an interview in 2013:
"I saw it was him (calling), but the thing is, you can't save World of Warcraft. You can't pause it. It's live."
He shared the same story with Conan O'Brien on his show in 2016, adding that he had his priorities straight at the time. Cavill later called Snyder to apologize for missing his call because he "was saving someone's life, which (he) does all the time."
2) Henry Cavill almost played Edward in the Twilight movies
The British actor and Superman are essentially synonymous, but besides the famed DC superhero, Henry Cavill was almost a vampire star too.
Before there was Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen in the Twilight movies, Cavill was deemed the "perfect Edward," according to the Twilight series author Stephenie Meyer.
Meyer wrote in her blog in July 2007 shortly after the series was optioned by Summit Entertainment about losing the British actor to play the telepathic vampire:
"The most disappointing thing for me is losing my perfect Edward. Henry Cavill is now twenty-four-years-old. Let us have a moment of quiet in which to mourn..."
However, it's not the first time Pattinson won a role over Cavill, as he also auditioned to play Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter, which the Twilight star portrayed.
3) He was almost James Bond too
Another stardom-worthy role that Cavill almost had was James Bond in the 2006 film Casino Royale. It's one of the British actor's most coveted roles, but while he was deemed too old for the Twilight movies, he was considered too young to play Agent 007 in the Bond franchise.
Talking about coming close to playing the iconic Secret Service agent, Cavill told Josh Horowitz in his Happy Sad Confused podcast in 2022:
"They told me it was ultimately down to, and this is what I've been told, it was just down to me and Daniel, and I was the younger option."
However, all is not lost because Craig's James Bond has bid his farewell, and the franchise is looking for its new Agent 007.
4) Henry Cavill annoyed his agents to get The Witcher role
The British actor received immense praise from both critics and video game fans for his portrayal of the white-haired, buff monster-hunter in The Witcher series. However, Cavill's work in playing Geralt of Rivia began even before the shooting started, and, in fact, even before the script for the show was even written.
When news that the video game would get a TV adaptation, he hounded his agents to schedule a meeting with the series showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich to the point that Hissrich found him "really annoying."
Talking about him being proactive in getting the role even before the script was finalized, the Deadpool & Wolverine actor told Vulture in 2019:
"It was something I wasn't going to let pass me without giving it my best shot. I annoyed my agents all the time. They said, 'They're not ready.'"
5) He paints video game miniatures
It's not a secret that Henry Cavill can get nerdy when it comes to video games, and more recently, with Warhammer. What some fans might not know is that he also paints video game figurines.
He shared his work of art on Instagram, saying that he tried using "numerous different paints and techniques" and that he's "not amazing by any means." Fans showered the actor with praise in the comments.
Henry Cavill recently made a cameo in the recently released Deadpool & Wolverine movie and will be back on the big screen in 2025 for In The Grey and Enola Holmes 3.
