Marvel fans have accepted and embraced many Spider-Man actors over the years. The beloved neighborhood superhero has appeared in many forms of media ranging from animated series to movies. All the Spider-Man iterations, to date, draw from the original comic book character, but at the same time, they are also distinctive, which adds to the fascination people have with the character.

In fact, each Spider-Man actor has made a point to add their own flair to the persona of the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. This meant that the audience never got bored of seeing the same character over and over again. Not only that, the varied iterations also allowed creators to explore different storylines that would fit their distinctive personalities.

Although there are plenty of Spider-Man actors, we take a look at the select few who quickly climbed up the fan-favorite lists for their endearing performances.

It might be surprising that the same actor who played the role of Friedrich von Trapp in The Sound of Music transformed into a crime-fighting superhero in The Amazing Spider-Man but that is exactly what happened with Nicholas Hammond.

Out of all the Spider-Man actors on this list, Hammond holds a special place as he delivered the first live-action portrayal of the superhero. His version of Spider-Man wasn't quite as benevolent with quick quips and insults as the comic book character but he still nailed Peter Parker's good-hearted nature and quick-thinking which helps him get out of risky situations.

Hammond's Spider-Man also helped popularize the "spider-tracer" which was woven into the storyline of multiple episodes.

Marvel fans can't help but be fascinated with the Japanese live-action series loosely based on the Marvel character. The Spider-Man actor who suited up for the role is Shinji Todo. Commonly referred to as Japanese Spider-Man, the show aired for 41 episodes.

Shinji's Spider-Man is very different from other iterations on this list because the creators decided to take a different route with the origin and storytelling. In the show, he is a motorbike racer. And, instead of the radioactive spider, this character gets his powers after being injected with the blood of an alien from Planet Spider. The only similarity with the other versions would be the costume.

All Spider-Man actors display some level of hand-to-hand combat but Shinji's Spider-Man was particularly proficient with ninjitsu. Ardent fans are drawn to the refreshing new backstory and exciting adventures.

Playing a well-known character comes with its challenges because the audience comes to the theatres with set expectations. The Spider-Man actor who lived up to everyone's expectations from the get-go is Tobey Maguire.

Maguire's inspired performance prompted viewers to become invested in his journey of evolving from a timid teenager to a masked superhero who has many burdens to bear. He also shared amazing chemistry with Kirsten Dunst's Mary Jane Watson which led to the iconic upside-down kiss that will be remembered by fans for a long time to come.

Out of all the Spider-Man actors on this list, Maguire particularly shined in serious scenes wherein he said what he needed to say, not with words, but through subtle facial expressions and body language.

Where to watch: Spider-Man is available for streaming on Netflix, Apple TV+ and Prime Video.

4) Andrew Garfield: First appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

Andrew Garfield knew he had big boots to fill after Tobey Maguire and certainly stepped up to the challenge. This Spider-Man actor was able to capture the awkward yet cheeky personality of the teenager underneath the costume with flying colors.

Garfield's iteration gained popularity because the narratives perfectly captured the emotional stakes involved in his battles against evil, a theme that is common in the comic books. His complicated relationship with Gwen Stacy, portrayed by Emma Stone, also helped showcase how difficult it is for Peter Parker to lead a normal life when he has to put saving the world above everyone and everything else.

Although Garfield's time as the masked superhero didn't last long, fans appreciate the actor for infusing his own brand of charisma and humor.

5) Tom Holland: First appeared in Captain America: Civil War (2016)

More often than not, Spider-Man actors have been much older than the actual character which sometimes made it difficult for viewers to accept them as teenagers. But Tom Holland helped change that for the better. His portrayal of the Marvel superhero felt believable because he nailed the adolescent mannerisms of the character.

This Spider-Man actor also achieved the perfect balance between the nerdy and awkward side of Peter Parker and the confident and quick-witted persona he embodies after putting on the suit.

The audience particularly admired his bond with Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr. His connection with Stark helped distinguish this iteration from previous versions as he has access to state-of-the-art technology that helped give him the upper hand in his fight against evil.

Where to watch: Captain America: Civil War is available on Disney+, Prime Video and Apple TV+.

6) Shameik Moore: First appeared in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

For years, the audience had associated Peter Parker with Spider-Man but when this Spider-Man actor came onto the scene, fans couldn't stop talking about Miles Morales. Unlike the other Spider-Man actors on this list, Shameik Moore doesn't actually put on the suit on-screen but voices the animated character who does.

Miles, like Peter Parker, gains his powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider. Spider-Man fans have enjoyed Moore's portrayal of a complex warm-hearted youth who is determined to do the right thing but suffers from the consequences of inexperience and naivety associated with his age.

Unlike Holland, Garfield and the rest, Moore cannot rely on physical cues to help him portray his feelings to the audience but he does have his words and he uses them well. Moore effortlessly captures the light-heartedness of the fun moments as well as the strained notes that make up the emotional scenes.

Where to watch: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is available on Apple TV+, Prime Video and Netflix.

Marvel fans will always remember these Spider-Man actors because they were able to infuse a bit of themselves into the role and make the character stand out.
