Directed by Benjamin Renner, Migration, is an adventure comedy that features the voices of Kumail Nanjiani, Danny DeVito, and others. The story revolves around a family of mallards and its patriarch, Mack, who is afraid of venturing out of his comfort zone.
However, after looking at his uncle’s loneliness, he decides to migrate with his family to Jamaica. Their trip is full of laughs and adventures as they encounter various obstacles and experience the happening, New York City, en route.
Migration has themes of family bonding, adapting to change, and experiencing life to the fullest. The movie’s voice performances and animation were praised. 1) The Lorax - Amazon Prime Video
The Lorax is a musical comedy that is based on Dr. Seuss’ children’s book. The movie is about Lorax (Danny DeVito), a humanoid who is the guardian of forests. Ever since Ted (Zac Efron) was a young boy, he has been determined to plant a real tree to impress his crush, as there are only artificial trees in Thneedville.
Just like Migration, the movie has themes of nature. Both the movies are by Illumination Studios, so fans who liked Migration’s animation, can also enjoy this. And in both the films, there is the voice of Danny DeVito, who infuses both the films with humor.
2) The Secret Life of Pets - Amazon Prime Video
The Secret Life of Pets is another project by Illumination Studios. The movie is about a dog Max (Louis CK), whose comfortable life is upended when his owner brings another dog, Duke (Eric Stonestreet). Both the dogs accidently escape the apartment and their friends have a wild adventure in the city trying to find the two.
Just like in Migration, in this movie too, the animal characters have to find their way through New York City. In both of the movies, they encounter unique and interesting wild animals. Both the protagonists from the movies, Mack and Max, are scared of the outside world and learn to come out of their comfort zones.
3) The Mitchells vs The Machines - Netflix
Starring the voices of Maya Rudolph, Olivia Colman, and others, The Mitchells vs The Machines is an animated comedy that revolves around the quirky Mitchell family. Rick, plans to send off his daughter, Katie, to college through a cross-country trip, they have to end up saving the world from an uprising of evil robots.
Just like Migration, the movie has the same premise of a family setting out for a trip. Both the movies have themes of helping others and both the families are dysfunctional in their own way. Another common theme in the films is family bonding.
4) Madagascar - Apple TV+
Featuring the voices of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Smith, and others, Madagascar is a popular animated movie that revolves around four animal friends from Central Park Zoo, who get accidentally stranded on the island of Madagascar and must now learn to adapt on their new surroundings.
Both Migration and Madagascar are about getting out of their comfort zone and experiencing the outside world. In both of the movies, the animals end up in far-off places than their home and teach viewers about adjusting to one’s loved ones and overcoming differences. Both of the movies also have quirky characters like herons and lemurs that add humor to the narrative.
5) Onward - Amazon Prime Video
Directed by Dan Scanlon, Onward, is a fantasy film about two elf-brothers, Ian and Barley (Tom Holland and Chris Pratt), who set out on a magical adventure to find a precious artifact that can revive their dead father for 24 hours. While their mother is hell-bent on bringing them back home.
Just like Migration, the film Onward has the same premise of characters setting out for an adventure. While the brothers’ trip is marked by magical, enchanting, and mystical creatures, the Mallard’s trip is also a whirlwind trip. Both of the movies have humor and especially focus on familial bonds and love.
6) Over the Hedge - Amazon Prime Video
A heist comedy, Over the Hedge, is based on a comic strip by Michael Fry and T. Lewis. Voiced by Bruce Willis, Steve Carell, and others, the movie is about a racoon, RJ, who accidentally destroys the bear, Vincent’s, food and must now bring his food in one week to save his life. He soon decides to gather along with other animals to help him steal food from human homes.
While the movie has a different plotline than Migration, it does have the same theme of forest creatures adapting to human society. Both movies are about animals tackling new environments and providing humor while at it.
7) Home - Amazon Prime Video
A science-fiction comedy, Home, is an animated flick based on Adam Rex’s children’s book. Featuring the voices of Rihanna, Steve Martin, and others, it focuses on the duo of a friendly alien who does not get along with his kind and a teenage girl searching for her mother after the Earth gets invaded by aliens.
Home is a heartwarming movie with adventure and emotional depth. Like Migration, it has a similar theme of characters taking a journey and learning the value of courage, love, and companionship. Both of the movies offer rich character development.
