A remake of the 1951 film of the same name, based on a 1940 short story, The Day the Earth Stood Still, was directed by Scott Derrickson and stars Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, the alien who is sent to Earth to inspire humans to change their destructive habits.

Also starring Jennifer Connelly and Kathy Bates, the movie is set against the backdrop of a rapidly decaying Earth, which has suffered environmental degradation due to wasteful activities. It received mixed reviews upon release.
