Duplicity, True Lies, and other movies to watch if one liked The Union
1) Ghosted - Apple TV+
Directed by Dexter Fletcher and starring Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, and Adrian Brody, this adventure comedy film from Apple, has a similar story to The Union.
Just like Mike finds himself in the midst of a dangerous mission due to his lover, similarly, Cole (Chris) also gets wrapped into the world of secret missions after a chance encounter with his date Sadie (Ana), who turns out to be an agent.
The movie has the same mix of humor, action, and comedy, and has a bevy of international settings. Filled with action sequences and high-voltage chases, the movie is one of the most watched films on Apple TV+
2) Mr and Mrs Smith - Amazon Video
Starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and directed by Doug Liman, this action-comedy film also mixes civilian and spy life like The Union. Just like Mark’s character, John (Pitt) is also in the construction business, while Jane (Jolie) is a tech consultant.
Yet, the movie’s twist is that John and Jane are actually highly-skilled assassins, who keep this a secret from each other. This lie is uncovered when the duo face the complication of killing each other—changing their marriage and relationship forever.
The movie was a box-office hit and fans loved the smoldering chemistry between Pitt and Jolie.
3) Duplicity - Amazon Video
Directed by Tony Gilroy and starring Julia Roberts and Clive Owen, this crime-comedy film centers around two corporate spies who have a complicated past with each other. But they now have to join forces to carry out a high-stakes mission.
The movie has been praised for its snappy dialogues, sophisticated and intricate plot, and a clever time-jumping storyline, that keeps the viewers hooked.
While The Union mixes normal life with spy life, this movie is all out about agents and their entanglements, but with the same humor, as in The Union.
4) Get Smart - Amazon Video
Starring Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway, this action-comedy film is based on a 1960s tv show that parodied the secret agent genre. In the movie, Maxwell (Steve) works for an American intelligence company but wants to become a field agent. His dream is finally realized when he is paired with Agent 99 (Anne) to foil a terrorist plot.
The film is similar to The Union as it brings together the naivety of a common man with the skills of a razor-sharp agent.
Just like Mark’s character, here, Steve’s character is suddenly thrust into the world of danger, which also results in the same kind of humor.
5) True Lies - Apple TV+
Directed by James Cameron, and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis, this action-comedy film is a remake of a 1991 French movie. Just like The Union, this movie also intertwines the spheres of domestic and spy life with humor and action.
In the film, Harry (Arnold) is a secret agent, unbeknownst to his wife Helen (Jamie). As he tries to juggle his double life, danger strikes, when a terrorist kidnaps both him and his wife.
The film was a success and won multiple awards. The relationship between Harry and Helen is also similar to Mike and Roxanne in The Union as the couple regains love after a thrilling adventure.
6) Killers - Amazon Video
Starring Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher, here the gender is reversed as in Killers, the female lead, Jen (Heigl), is a civilian, who falls for an assassin, Spencer (Kutcher). While Spencer leaves his dangerous life for Jen, he is still interested in his previous life.
The movie turns hilarious when it is revealed that there is a bounty prize placed on Spencer’s life. The film is an easy and breezy watch and plays with the same civilian and spy dynamic between two lovers as The Union.
7) My Spy - Amazon Video
This hilarious action film has a nine-year-old girl at the centre and makes for a great family watch. But JJ’ plan goes awry when Sophie (Chloe) catches them surveilling and blackmails JJ to accompany her as her personal spy to help her in accommodating in her school life.
The film is slightly different than The Union but has the same overarching theme of a spy blending with civilians. The humor makes it a fun watch.
