Greyhound is a realistic retelling of the historic Battle of the Atlantic, which took place in 1942 under the leadership of Captain Ernest Kraus. Directed by Aaron Schneider, the movie stars Tom Hanks, Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan, and Elisabeth Shue. It was released in 2020 via Apple TV+.
Greyhound was the radio call sign for the USS Keeling, commandeered by Captain Kraus, and incidentally, was also his first wartime command. The movie was nominated for 23 awards and won the Golden Reel Award, USA in 2021.

2) 1917 (2019)

Directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Woody Harrelson, Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, and Nick Jonas, among other acclaimed actors, Midway is another historical wartime recounting. Like Greyhound, it immerses the audience in the depth of its important figures and is a great addition to a viewer's go-to war movies.

4) K-19: The Widowmaker (2002)

K-19: The Widowmaker, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, takes place in 1961 aboard the Soviet submarine K-19. This Paramount Pictures production was released in the US, Germany, and the UK, focusing on the launch of the Soviet Union's first ballistic missile submarine.
The casting includes Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson as Captain Alexei Vostrikov, as well as Mikhael Polenin, respectively. Even though the movie did not collect in its box-office earnings, it did get nominated for the Political Film Society Awards, USA. For those deep in the war genre rabbit hole, this movie can surely be on the list.

5) The Outpost (2019)

This war film is based on a book by Jake Tapper, titled The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor, focusing on the Battle of Kamdesh in Afghanistan. Starring Scott Eastwood, Caleb Landry Jones, and Orlando Bloom, this movie is based in Northern Afghanistan, which bore the brunt of regular Taliban attacks.
The Outpost won two awards out of seven nominations, including the National Board of Review Awards and the Top 15 Award. The film is directed by Rod Lurie, who is a graduate of the United States Military Academy himself.

6) Darkest Hour (2017)

While Darkest Hour is not a war film, it starkly portrays what happened behind the scenes during the Second World War.
