Carrying supernatural elements with a romantic storyline spanning five movies, The Twilight Saga is one of the most well-known and highly streamed film franchises. Based on the novels by Stephenie Meyer, the films revolve around the life of Bella Swan and her love story with the vampire, Edward Cullen.
With Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in the above two roles, respectively, the plot has their relationship fight against the dangers of a mystical world filled with other vampires, werewolves, and covens.
In 2012, however, the expansive storyline ended with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2, despite fans’ wishes for more. However, movies like Red Riding Hood and Warm Bodies exist in the same genre and have the potential to give Twilight fans newfound solace.
Movies like The Twilight Saga to dive into the otherworld
The Twilight Saga may have had its fair share of mixed critical reviews, however, it never lost its audience pull. Genres like fantasy and romance, and of course, vampires, hooked in a large and young fandom. Thus, its end left a hole in fans’ hearts.
But fans of the fantasy, supernatural, horror, mystery, and romance genres, need not fret, as they may find these seven recommendations worthwhile:
- The Covenant
- Red Riding Hood
- Fallen
- Warm Bodies
- Beautiful Creatures
- Beastly
- Harry Potter
1) The Covenant - 2006 (Apple TV)
Starring the likes of Sebastian Stan and Chace Crawford, this movie revolves around four high school boys and their supernatural abilities. Being descendants of colonial witch families, the group, known as the Sons of Ipswich, have their powers manifest on their 13th birthday.
The plot kicks in when paranormal occurrences start happening during a bonfire. Investigation around a dead student reveals that another one of their schoolmates, Chase, portrayed by Sebastian Stan, is the antagonist and a descendant of another witch family, hell-bent on absorbing powers from the boys to ascend to a higher level.
A young cast, teenage life dynamics, witches, magic, and a dark, mysterious tone make The Covenant a suited watch for The Twilight Saga fans.
2) Red Riding Hood - 2011 (Prime Video, Apple TV)
Like The Twilight Saga movies, Red Riding Hood carries fantasy, romance, horror, and mystery. A cast featuring Amanda Seyfried and Max Irons, and a plot with a werewolf instead of a vampire, would rightly appeal to the Twilight audience.
Moreover, the director, Catherine Hardwicke, would add another link, with her having directed the first Twilight movie.
Red Riding Hood features a dark, moody atmosphere with the medieval village of Daggerhorn as the backdrop. The plot centers around Valerie, whose sister was killed by the werewolf, and the culprit could be anyone since it took a human form.
Valerie comes to realize that she can communicate with the beast, who demands that she leave with him, threatening to destroy the village otherwise. The movie’s conclusion unravels the werewolf’s identity, paying off the themes of love and sacrifice.
3) Fallen - 2016 (Filmbox+, Prime Video)
With a runtime of 92 minutes, Fallen is much shorter than The Twilight Saga movies. Yet, it has stayed on the watchlist of the latter's fans and readers of its original book series by Lauren Kate.
The story goes around Lucinda, a 17-year-old, who is in a reform school after being blamed for the death of a boy. In there, she finds herself inexplicably attracted to one Daniel. On the other hand, a boy named Cameron feels the same way about her.
After the romance is set, the supernatural element comes when Luce learns that both the boys are fallen angels, who have been in love with her for centuries. A battle between Heaven and Hell concludes the movie, with the love triangle and plot serving Twilight-esque vibes.
4) Warm Bodies - 2013 (Netflix)
Supernatural romance, dark atmosphere, redemption, and character development bring Warm Bodies on par with The Twilight Saga.
Interestingly, it is based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, but set in a post-apocalyptic world full of zombies. With this chilling tone, the narrative moves around a living dead named R, who, unlike his peers, can feel emotions.
At an airport, he meets one human, Julie Grigio, and gets drawn to her and saves her from attacks. Over time, that love results in R slowly coming back to life, with his beating heart and communication ability returning.
Ultimately, a series of events from this unnatural romance cause a new status quo for society.
5) Beautiful Creatures - 2013 (Lionsgate Play)
On one fateful day of his junior year, Ethan Wate meets Lena Duchannes. The one oddity was that she resembled a girl who haunted the teen in his recurring dreams.
Regardless, the duo soon forms a close bond, leading to the chilling discovery of Lena and her family being witches.
With her 16th birthday fast approaching, she faces a possibility of being claimed either by the light or the dark side. The pair embark on a journey to uncover deep secrets, further learning that their ancestors were lovers separated by fate.
Finally, as Lena’s family tries their might to push her towards evil, Ethan attempts to balance everything once and for all.
Forbidden love, romantic tension, the play of fate, a dark atmosphere, and the role of destiny would appeal to those coming from Twilight.
6) Beastly - 2011 (Prime Video)
Both The Twilight Saga and Beastly blend elements of romance with supernatural and fantastical themes. A tale of transformation and redemption, strong emotional connections, and a dramatic storyline are common to both as well.
Much like Edward Cullen’s character shifting in The Twilight Saga, this movie follows the transformation of Kyle Kingson, played by Alex Pettyfer, from an arrogant high schooler to a hideous version of himself following a witch’s curse.
The only cure for him is finding someone who would love him despite his monstrous appearance. The plot eventually builds towards that search for his shot at love.
7) Harry Potter series - 2001 to 2011 (Peacock)
Excluding the Harry Potter saga of magic, fantasy, love, heartbreak, and sacrifice based on a book series, much like The Twilight Saga, would do this list injustice.
Iconic casts, coming-of-age stories, good vs. evil, rich fantasy worlds, emotional connections, and massive fan bases bridge eight movies of the Harry Potter series to five of The Twilight Saga.
Daniel Radcliffe dons the wizard hat as the titular character of Harry Potter. Invited to attend the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he learns of his parents’ murder by the antagonist wizard, Voldemort.
Banding together with his friends, the narrative has them evolve over a decade of storytelling, leading to one final confrontation and a payoff.
Carrying Stephanie Meyers’ legacy from the Twilight books, The Twilight Saga of movies holds an immovable place in fans’ hearts, however, they could have a similar experience watching the ones mentioned in the list above.
