8 new voice actors who will be joining the Inside Out family

When Inside Out was released in the theatres back in 2015, its fresh concept and relatable characters won over movie-goers. Even adults connected to the heartwarming coming-of-age narrative. Given that Inside Out made over $858 million worldwide, fans knew that a sequel was on the cards. However, it has taken nine years for the same.

Kelsey Mann's feature directorial debut, Inside Out 2 recently premiered at El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles and will hit theatres on June 14, 2024. Many of the beloved characters from Inside Out will return. However, since the story focuses on Riley's teenage phase, fans can expect a whole range of new emotions who will help her navigate this monumental time of her life.

In terms of the cast, there have been a few additions, along with some notable changes. In this list, we take a look at the new voice actors who fans will get to meet in Inside Out 2.

Ayo Edebiri, June Squibb, and six other additions in Inside Out 2

1) Adèle Exarchopoulos - Ennui

While Adèle Exarchopoulos may not be a familiar name in Hollywood, this talented actor from France has earned quite a reputation in the international film circuit. She became the youngest person in history to win the Palme d'Or in 2013. Cinephiles should make a point to watch Blue Is the Warmest Colour (2013).

In Inside Out 2, Adèle voices the character, Ennui. This new emotion will represent the feeling of boredom. As Riley is stepping into her teen years, it is expected that she will experience more complex feelings and it will be interesting to see how Ennui's arrival impacts her enthusiasm and outlook.


2) Ayo Edebiri - Envy

Fans of The Bear will know Ayo Edebiri as the talented sous-chef Sydney Adamu. Even before she starred in the popular TV show, her witty sense of humor got noticed when she started writing for Big Mouth and What We Do in the Shadows.

Edebiri has also done her fair share of voice acting, including big projects like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

In the new movie, she will be the voice of Envy. Another new emotion joining the Inside Out gang, Envy is in charge of managing Riley's jealous tendencies. Like most teenagers, Riley will also seek out ways to fit in with the cool kids. Fans will have to wait and see how Envy helps Riley manage her feelings when she is envious.


3) June Squibb - Nostalgia

94-year-old June Squibb is no newbie in the film industry. She first started acting on stage before graduating to television and films. Cinephiles will remember June from her work in Meet Joe Black (1998), Nebraska (2013), and Hubie Halloween (2020), among others.

Squibb has also lent her voice to many animated films including Toy Story 4 (2019) and Soul (2020). This year, in a first, she also plays the lead in Josh Margolin's Thelma.

Sweet and adorable, Nostalgia is a character that exudes warmth as soon as she enters Inside Out 2. The little bit that fans see of Nostalgia in the trailer is enough to get them excited to learn more.


4) Kensington Tallman - Riley

Both Inside Out and Inside Out 2 are heavily centered around Riley. It is because of Riley that fans were introduced to the interesting emotions who make them laugh. Although the protagonist was voiced by Kaitlyn Dias in the first movie, Kensington Tallman will be replacing her in Inside Out 2.

Kensington is a young actor who has appeared in several television shows to date. Nickelodeon fans, in particular, will remember Kensington from Drama Club wherein she played the role of Bianca Magic.

Fans of the movie will be hoping that Kensington will continue to bring out the spirited side of Riley, as well as realistically express her feelings and emotions as she enters a particularly confusing phase of her life.


5) Liza Lapira - Disgust

Inside Out fans couldn't get enough of Disgust because of her snide comments and sassy attitude, and Mindy Kaling gets credit for making the character memorable. However, in Inside Out 2, she will be replaced by 42-year-old Liza Lapira.

The talented Filipino-American has appeared in several movies and television shows including Fast & Furious (2009), Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011), and others. Given that she has big shoes to fill, it does help that Lapira has done voice acting before. She voiced "Party dog #1" in Marmaduke (2010).

Disgust does appear in both the trailers of the new movie and she seems as bold as ever, which means that fans can expect the character to deliver iconic lines similar to the ones that stood out in Inside Out.


6) Maya Hawke - Anxiety

Given that her parents are Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, it is not surprising that Maya Hawke chose to pursue acting. She made her screen debut in the 2017 mini-series Little Women adapted from Louisa May Alcott's classic novel. Critics had great things to say about her performance as Jo March.

However, the role that helped her amass international fans was Robin Buckley in the ever-so-popular show, Stranger Things. In terms of voice acting, she voiced Abyss in the 2023 animated show, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.

Fans will be delighted to know that Maya will be voicing Anxiety in the new movie. As Robin Buckley, Maya showed viewers that she can be cool and awkward at the same time. It will be interesting to see how Maya voices Riley's evolving emotions as she becomes more self-aware.


7) Paul Walter Hauser - Embarrassment

37-year-old Paul Walter Hauser has an impressive body of work. He has appeared in several movies including Cruella (2021), Old Dads (2023), and others. Cinephiles may also remember him from shows such as Kingdom, Cobra Kai, and Black Bird. He won a Golden Globe for playing the role of Larry Hall in Black Bird.

Paul will be voicing Embarrassment, one of the new emotions fans will get to meet in Inside Out 2. Growing up usually means new experiences and Riley will have many of those as she embraces her teen phase. It is not new for teenagers to feel embarrassed about making mistakes in social situations which is why Embarrassment will have a big role to play in Inside Out 2.


8) Tony Hale - Fear

Fear is one of the emotions that fans became acquainted with in Inside Out. Voiced by Bill Hader in the first movie, Fear does his best to keep Riley away from things that can cause her harm. In Inside Out 2, Bill Hader will be replaced by the talented Tony Hale who received wide acclaim for his impressive comedic range in Arrested Development.

As far as voice acting goes, Hale has plenty of experience. He lent his voice to Ross, Mime, Cyrus in The Angry Birds Movie (2016), Forky in Toy Story 4 (2019), Teeny Tiny Tony in Arlo the Alligator Boy (2021), and more. Fans are hoping that Tony Hale will bring his own flair to the beloved character in Inside Out 2.


Fans looking forward to the sequel should keep their eyes peeled for these new actors and the interesting characters they voice in Inside Out 2.
