Ted Danson plays Sam Malone, the bar owner and bartender, who was once a baseball pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. His career ended due to alcoholism, and he has an on-again, off-again relationship with Diane Chambers.

Sam has numerous affairs with women but never pursues a committed relationship. He attempts, with differing degrees of success, to court Rebecca Howe after Diane is written out of the series.
