A Turkish time travel historical drama, Midnight at the Pera Palace, is directed by Emre Sahin and stars Hazal Kaya. Inspired by the non-fiction book Midnight at the Pera Palace: The Birth of Modern Istanbul by Charles King, the show is based around the real-life Pera Palace hotel.

The show revolves around a journalist in Istanbul, Esra (Kaya), who visits the hotel for an assignment. She is intrigued by the history of the place and particularly by the personality of Peride, who saved Mustafa Kemal from an assassination plot in 1919.

Esra accidentally transports back in time due to a mysterious key and a hotel room that acts as a time machine. As she finds herself back in 1919 and mistaken for Peride, it is now up to her to stop the historical assassination and maintain the course of history.

The Protector is a Turkish fantasy drama directed by Umut Aral and is adapted from a novel by Nilüfer Ipek Gökdel. Even though the show does not include time travel, it has plenty of fantasy and magic, which viewers of Midnight at the Pera Palace will enjoy.

The show is about a shopkeeper in Istanbul, Hakan Demir, who realizes that he is connected to an ancient secret order. He must therefore accept his duties and protect Istanbul from an immortal enemy. As he struggles to find a balance between his new life and his new love, he also finds out that the immortal’s blood has a secret power.

Based on a comic series by Brian K. Vaughan, Paper Girls, is a science fiction drama created by Stephany Folsom. The series is set in 1988 and revolves around four young girls, who while delivering papers in the morning, have a strange encounter that sends them into the year 2019.

As they travel through time, they encounter their future selves, and must make sure that they keep the wheel of time spinning in the right direction. Like Midnight at the Pera Palace, the show revolves around time travel and has the same theme of keeping the world safe.


3) Time Bandits - Apple TV+

Based on the 1981 film by Terry Gilliam, Time Bandits, is a fantasy adventure series starring Lisa Kudrow, Taika Waititi, and others. The show follows a young history nerd, Kevin, who is bullied at school. Kevin's days of misery are over when he finds a magical portal in his room, which allows time travel.

He soon finds himself amongst Penelope (Kudrow) and her team of thieves. The show is infused with humor and has the central theme of time travel, which fans of Midnight at the Pera Palace, will surely love.

Based on the characters in DC comics, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, is a time-travel superhero series. Its central premise revolves around Rip Hunter, a time traveler, who has seen the chaos and destruction that will unfold in the future.

He gathers a team of superheroes including The Atom, Hawkgirl, and others who aim to prevent future destruction via time travel. Just like Midnight at the Pera Palace, this show seeks to correct the future by keeping the past events in line.


5) 12 Monkeys - Amazon Prime Video

Based on a 1995 film by Terry Gilliam, 12 Monkeys, is a sci-fi series. The show is set in the 2040s when a plague wipes out most of humanity. When physicist Katarina Jones, learns about time travel, she enlists the help of a time traveler, James Cole, to travel back in time and prevent the plague from happening.

The deadly virus was released by an organization known as the ‘Army of the 12 Monkeys’, and now Cole must stop them with the help of virologist, Cassandra Railly. The show has a perfect mix of time travel and romance, which fans of Midnight at the Pera Palace, will love.


6) Outlander - Netflix

Based on a novel series by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander is a historical drama developed by Ronald D. Moore. The story is about a former WWII nurse, Claire Randall, who is living in 1945, but on a trip to Scotland with her husband, she time travels to 1743.

She is embroiled in a rebel group and has to marry a Scottish warrior to keep herself alive. Full of twists and turns, the show uses the trope of time travel to explore various themes, which is much like Midnight at the Pera Palace.

A sci-fi thriller, 11.22.63, is a miniseries based on a novel by Stephen King. Produced by James Franco, the show is about Jake Epping (Franco), who travels back to 1960 after his friend builds a time machine but is too sick to use it. Persuaded to stop the assassination of US President, John F. Kennedy, Jake discovers that it’s not going to be as easy as he thought. This thriller also revolves around a political assassination just like the storyline of Midnight at the Pera Palace.

Another Turkish fantasy drama, Shahmaran, is directed by Umur Turagay and stars Burak Deniz and Serenay Sarikaya. The show revolves around a psychology professor, Sahsu, who goes to Adana and decides to confront her grandfather who abandoned her mother.

Once in Adana, she becomes entangled in a mysterious community that worships a mythical goddess, Sahmaran, who is part woman and part snake. As the community waits for a historical prophecy to complete, Sahsu meets an enigmatic man, Maran. The show has a lot of mysterious and fantasy elements which makes it a good option for viewers of Midnight at the Pera Palace.
