The much-anticipated music biopic, A Complete Unknown, which focuses on the life of the legendary musician and poet Bob Dylan, has finally dropped its first teaser, giving a glimpse at Timothee Chalamet bringing the famed musician to life, in what could turn out to be one of the greatest music biopics of all time.
Coming from veteran director James Mangold, who is known for his treatment of a variety of genres, A Complete Unknown will reportedly cover Dylan's formative years but will focus primarily on his controversial switch to electrically amplified instruments and more rock-oriented compositions.
This trailer gives the first glimpse at Timothee Chalamet as Bob Dylan and Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, the two musicians, who would go on to become cultural icons. The movie is also set to feature many other historical characters, like Sylvie Russo (Elle Fanning), Johnny Cash (Boyd Holbrook), and Woody Guthrie (Scoot McNairy).
While it will definitely have many other famed songs of Bob Dylan, the first teaser for A Complete Unknown featured A Hard Rain’s A‐Gonna Fall throughout its duration.
A Complete Unknown trailer hints at genius filmmaking and brilliant casting
The first teaser for A Complete Unknown was quite impressive, as one would expect from James Mangold. The veteran director, who has touched practically all genres with films like Logan and Ford Vs. Ferrari, has also previously directed a music biopic, I Walk the Line, which follows the story of country legend Johnny Cash.
With Bob Dylan's story, there is a far bigger fanbase to appease. Timothee Chalamet's casting, too, was a source of a lot of scrutiny when it was first announced. But as the first teaser plays out, it is evident that the Dune star has fit in the shoes of Dylan perfectly.
The other cast members, like Elle Fanning and Monica Barbaro, also fit in their roles quite perfectly, giving a great early impression of the movie.
Moreover, the perfect progression of the teaser also sees the origin story of Bob Dylan slowly unravel, all the while A Hard Rains-A Gonna Fall plays in the background, giving a complete picture of the art and the artist.
The trailer also shows various phases of Bob Dylan and how Chalamet perfectly embodies each one of them.
As revealed earlier, the primary focus of the James Mangold movie will be the controversial switch to electric that left Dylan fans divided all around the world. This phase has also been explored before in Todd Haynes' acclaimed biopic surrounding Bob Dylan, I'm Not There.
The movie is also an adaptation of Dylan Goes Electric by Elijah Wald. The film was originally titled Going Electric, but it was later changed to A Complete Unknown, which borrows a phrase from the legendary musician's Like A Rollin' Stone.
Despite receiving a teaser, the movie's release date has yet to be announced, and speculations suggest that it will be sometime in 2025.
More details about A Complete Unknown are slated to arrive soon. Stay tuned for more updates.
