A Different Man, an American psychological dark comedy film, was released in the United States on September 20, 2024, by A24. Written and directed by Aaron Schimberg, the movie stars Sebastian Stan, Renate Reinsve, and Adam Pearson in lead roles. The story centers on Edward Lemuel (played by Sebastian Stan), a socially awkward actor with neurofibromatosis, a condition that causes severe facial disfigurement.
Struggling with his insecurities and yearning for acceptance, Edward undergoes a risky experimental treatment that transforms his face. Instead of embracing his new identity, Edward creates a persona named "Guy Moratz," faking his own death to leave his former life behind.
As "Guy," Edward finds moderate success as a real estate agent and begins to navigate life with his altered appearance. However, his new existence becomes increasingly complicated when he discovers his former neighbor Ingrid (played by Renate Reinsve), a playwright, is producing a play based on his life.
Edward auditions for the lead role, wearing a mask of his original face, and eventually secures the part. What follows is a descent into personal chaos as Edward grows resentful of Oswald, a charismatic man with neurofibromatosis, who replaces him both in the play and in Ingrid’s life.

What is A Different Man about?

Edward Lemuel is a struggling actor living with neurofibromatosis, a condition that causes severe facial disfigurement. Socially awkward and riddled with insecurities, Edward befriends his neighbor, Ingrid, an aspiring playwright. Although he develops feelings for her, his self-consciousness prevents him from expressing them.
Desperate to escape his appearance and how others treat him, Edward undergoes a groundbreaking medical procedure to alter his face completely. Once the surgery is successful, he reinvents himself as “Guy Moratz” and stages his own death, leaving his old life behind without informing anyone, including his doctors.
As "Guy," Edward becomes a successful real estate agent, living a life that initially seems free from the limitations of his past. One day, he discovers that Ingrid has written and is producing an off-Broadway play based on his life as Edward. Intrigued and unable to resist revisiting his old identity, Edward auditions for the lead role while wearing a cast mask resembling his original face.
Ingrid, unaware of the truth, casts him in the part, and they soon begin a romantic relationship. However, their relationship takes a turn when Ingrid invites Oswald, a charismatic man with neurofibromatosis, to join the play. Oswald’s charm and confidence starkly contrast Edward’s self-loathing.
As Oswald gains favor with the cast and Ingrid, Edward’s jealousy spirals out of control. He begins mimicking Oswald’s mannerisms and wearing the mask outside rehearsals, blurring the lines between his real and fabricated selves. Eventually, Edward is replaced by Oswald in the lead role, both on stage and in Ingrid’s personal life.

His mental state deteriorates further, leading to a violent outburst during a performance where he attacks Oswald. The scuffle results in Edward suffering severe injuries when part of the set collapses on him.
Years later, after serving time for stabbing his physical therapist in a fit of rage, Edward reconnects with Ingrid and Oswald. Now a married, successful creative duo, they casually dismiss the significance of the play that once defined Edward’s life. The film ends ambiguously as Edward smiles faintly, hinting at a complicated mix of self-awareness, regret, and resignation.
