A Mistake (2024) is based on a novel by Carl Shukar

A Mistake (2024) is an adaptation of a novel by author Carl Shukar, who first published the book in 2019. It was shortlisted for the Jann Medlicott Acorn Prize for Fiction at the 2020 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards. One of the judges at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards said about the book:

"A Mistake is a masterful dissection of truth and fallibility, hubris and high-minded sexism, in the form of a literary thriller. This sharp-eyed, sharp-elbowed tale seamlessly combines a close observer's understanding of medicine and its political machinations with keen social observation and rare storytelling nous."

Carl Shukar has had a writing career spanning back to 2005, when he published his first novel, The Method Actors. The Method Actors has been described as a thriller and love story set in Tokyo that explored its darker underbelly at the turn of the 21st century.

Carl Shuker followed this up with 2006's The Lazy Boys, which was set in his native New Zealand, and covered themes of nihilism and toxic masculinity within the nation's rugby culture. Carl Shuker's other works include the 2011 short story collection Three Novellas for a Novel, and the 2013 novel Anti Lebanon.
