The film does not have a post-credits scene, so the makers have truly thought of an impactful and heart-wrenching ending. The protagonist, Sam, decides to face the noise-sensitive race of aliens terrorizing the planet on her own. She does this to save Eric, who is leaving the main island via boat. Sam plays music out loud in the end, announcing her location to the creatures and putting an end to her life.

At the end of the film, Sam (Lupita Nyong'o) is shown listening to the song 'Feeling Good' by singer Nina Simone on her earphones. This is after she gives Eric her yellow sweater and helps him escape with her cat, Frodo. As Eric runs towards the docks, Sam realizes they need a distraction to help him escape the aliens unscathed.

For this, Sam wanders the main streets of the city while listening to the song. She pulls out the earphone jack from her phone, and the music blares out. Since the aliens are attracted to the noise, she essentially makes herself an easy target so her loved ones can escape. The film ends with a shot of the deadly creatures appearing behind her.

While her death is not shown onscreen, the film certainly brought Sam's story to an end. She would choose not to run away and sacrifice her life, especially after she decided to play the music out loud and distract the aliens from Eric's escape.

Her death adds a layer of emotion to the story. Sam, a cancer patient who knew she might die from her ailment, took the manner of her death into her own hands. Despite the horror of the aliens, she still manages to close her story on her terms and is at peace in the end.

A Quiet Place: Day One is a prequel to the previous films that featured the Abbott family, led by John Krasinski and Emily Blunt. Instead, this film focuses on how the horrifying alien race invaded New York City and how people were forced into survival mode.

Sam, played by Lupita Nyong'o, is one of these survivors. Henri, played by Djimon Hounsou, also featured in the film as an ally to Sam and was a familiar face from the franchise's second installment.

In the end, the boat Eric escapes on ends up at the island featured in A Quiet Place II, a place that could keep the survivors safe. This indicates that Eric may have remained alive and might also feature in future films that are part of the series.
