A much-anticipated addition to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, is set to release in theaters on August 16, 2024. The film is directed by Fede Alvarez, best known for making the Evil Dead (2013) remake and Don't Breathe as well, and will be bringing a new feel to this franchise. It stars Cailee Spaeny, Isabela Merced, and more, in prominent roles.
The movie will be the seventh mainline film in the Alien franchise, but it won't be a sequel to the previously released prequels Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Instead, the film is set between the events of Alien and Aliens. It will also feature a brand new cast that will be taking on the Xenomorph.
Alien: Romulus' release date explored
Following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, it was announced that new films in the Alien franchise were in development. In 2022, it was revealed that Fede Alvarez would be writing and directing his own Alien film based on a pitch originally slated for a premiere on the streaming service Hulu, a similar release model to the Predator film Prey.
However, that decision was quickly reverted once filming commenced, and then Alien: Romulus was confirmed to have a theatrical release. The film is set to premiere in theaters on August 16, 2024, marking the seventh installment in the Alien franchise.
While there is no specific date for its streaming debut, fans can expect the film to arrive on Disney+ or Hulu once the movie is out of theaters, due to it being a 20th Century Studios release.
Cast of the film explored
Here is the list of actors to be featured in Alien: Romulus:
- Cailee Spaeny as Rain Carradine
- David Jonsson as Andy
- Archie Renaux as Tyler
- Isabela Merced as Kay
- Spike Fearn as Bjorn
- Alieen Wu as Navarro
When does Alien: Romulus take place?
Alien: Romulus is confirmed to be set between the first Alien movie and Aliens. In an interview with Total Film, director Fede Alvarez confirmed the timeline of the film.
"It takes place 20 years after the first film. Technology in the world of Alien can change vastly, but I think it’s not dependent on time. It’s dependent on place. Where you are," Alvarez said.
Given that the original Alien took place in 2122, fans can expect Romulus to take place in the year 2142.
What is Alien: Romulus about?
The upcoming Alien film is directed by Fede Alvarez, who wrote the script alongside Rodo Sayagues. Romulus won't be connected to any films in the franchise and is an interquel and standalone sequel. As per 20th Century Studios, the official synopsis for the film reads:
"The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful “Alien” franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe."
The architect of the universe, Ridley Scott, will be joining the film as a producer as well.
Fans can look forward to seeing Alien: Romulus, starring Cailee Spaeny, when it releases in theaters this Friday.
