A Million Ways to Die in the West is an American comedy film that remains one of Seth McFarlane's best works. The actor and director, known for Ted, Family Guy, and American Dad!, directed the Western drama film in 2014.
As per FlixPatrol, it is one of the highest-watched films on Netflix in the past few days, thus regaining its popularity.
A Million Ways to Die in the West is a satirical comedy that focuses on the themes of early Western films like Hang 'Em High (1968) and El Dorado (1966) among others. It features some stunning scenes reminiscent of classic films in the genre. However, the layered metaphorical funny moments steal the show.
The official synopsis reads:
"As a cowardly farmer begins to fall for the mysterious new woman in town, he must put his newly found courage to the test when her husband, a notorious gun-slinger, announces his arrival."
A Million Ways to Die in the West was primarily filmed at the Santa Fe Studios in New Mexico. Filming locations also included various other areas around New Mexico.
A Million Ways to Die in the West: Exploring all filming locations
Director Seth McFarlane wanted to capture the authenticity of life in the Wild West, thus he chose arid regions in and around New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado for filming. As per the New Mexico Film Office, principal photography for A Million Ways to Die in the West commenced in May 2013 and was completed by August 2013.
Santa Fe Studios, New Mexico
The film recreates the 1800s beautifully through the locations in the Santa Fe Studios. Sets were created to bring the age-old charm of the building structures and saloons shown throughout the film.
Monument Valley, Utah-Arizona State Lines
Monument Valley is a region of the vast Colorado Plateau. It is named so due to the cluster of sandstone buttes, which mimic monuments in the sprawling desert land. The valley is sacred to the Navajo people in the area.
There are multiple scenes throughout the film that depict the breathtaking views of the sandstone buttes along the Utah-Arizona state border. Some of the notable landmarks in the area include the Merrick Butte, the West and East Mitten Buttes, and Hunts Mesa. The Totem Pole is a naturally forming structure that is actually the remnants of a highly eroded butte.
Antonito, Colorado
Antonito is a scenic town in Colorado, USA. The town is featured in numerous scenes throughout the film. However, it is most prominently showcased in a scenic railroad and train shot filmed on the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad.
Antonito is an idle town close to the Conejos and San Antonio Rivers. It became an important part of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad line in 1889. The town maintains an antiquated look which suits the film perfectly. The town traces its history back to the 1880s, the era that Seth McFarlane has tried to recreate in his film.
Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico
Jemez Pueblo is a remote area in Sandoval County, New Mexico. It houses native American people who call the area Walatowa in their language. The region is specifically visible in the scenes that introduce Anna (Charlize Theron) and Clinch's (Liam Neeson) gang. The area features radiant red rocks and agricultural lands.
A Million Ways to Die in the West is currently available for streaming on Netflix. It can also be rented on Prime Video.
