Aloha is a military-themed romance set in Hawaii
Aloha is a military-themed romantic comedy that explores the sights of Hawaii while telling a story of intrigue and corruption.
Brian Gilcrest, a disillusioned former Air Force officer, comes to Hawaii to establish a space center. He's now working as a military contractor under the payroll of Carson and plans to lead negotiations with the Native Hawaiians to initiate a blessing ceremony that will signal their consent to the project.
He's partnered with Air Force Captain Allison Ng, who contrasts with Gilcrest in her idealism. The two undertake negotations with Bumpy Kanahele, who leads an isolated community in the island, and Allison's perspective proves crucial in convincing him to come around to the idea and give his consent.
Gilcrest and Ng have dinner at the home of his former girlfriend, Tracy, who has a new husband and is raising two children with him. Tracy later admits that she had wanted to start a new life with Gilcrest, only for him to abandon her.
At Carson's Christmas party, Gilcrest crosses paths with the Pacific Air Force chief General Dixon, who warns him not to screw up the deal. One of Carson's underlings hands him a top-secret thumb drive that reveals damning details about the satellite project; it's actually a cover for Carson to launch his own stash of nuclear playload into orbit.
Allison Ng discovers that the next day and is devastated to find out that Gilcrest agreed to the project anyway. Gilcrest ensures the project's success by thwarting a Chinese hacking attempt but can't let go of his guilt over betraying Allison, so he orders a sonic upload to be sent to space and destroy the satellite.
In the aftermath, General Dixon threatens to prosecute Gilcrest for sabotaging the project but relents after learning that Carson had nuclear weapons on the satellite. As a consequence, Carson is arrested, and Gilcrest reconciles with Allison.
Besides being controversial for its casting of Emma Stone, Aloha was poorly received by critics, having a 20% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
