Amy Schumer, the American stand-up comedian and actress, recently opened up about getting a mammogram and how fellow artist Olivia Munn inspired her to get one after her cancer diagnosis revelation.
Munn first revealed that she was diagnosed with stage 1 aggressive Luminal B breast cancer in both breasts in April 2023. She shared the detailed story in an interview with Good Morning America on Thursday, May 16, 2024.
On the same day, the 42-year-old comedian, Schumer, posted a photo of the Newsroom actress on the red carpet. She wrote over the picture,
"I love you @oliviamunn. I just got my annual mammogram because of your bravery. Schedule yours today."
As per the Centers for Disease Control, a mammogram is an x-ray picture of the breast that could be used to detect any early signs of breast cancer in a woman.
Amy Schumer praises Olivia Munn’s cancer "bravery" as she gets annual mammogram
Amy Schumer checked up on her health by going for her annual mammogram and thanked Olivia Munn for her bravery. Munn was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023.
On Thursday, a few hours before Amy Schumer expressed her gratitude to her fellow actress, Olivia went on Good Morning America. She said on the show,
"The hormone suppression therapy is brutal and it gave me next level debilitating exhaustion. I was just in bed all day long, all day long, and my quality of life was so minimal and I wasn’t able to be there for my baby. It’s so tiring. These drugs are so tiring, and I know I’m gonna stay aggressive. I know I’m going to do it."
Olivia Munn had four surgeries in the ten months, including a double mastectomy. She was on several medications including suppression drugs to minimize the production of hormones that caused luminal B to grow. The actress also decided to get a hysterectomy and ovariectomy to help get her energy back up.
Olivia said her doctor also suggested getting her started on another drug to suppress cancer-producing hormones in other areas of the body. She told GMA that when she first learned that she had "cancer," she immediately thought of her son Malcolm, whom she shares with her partner, John Mulaney. The artist recalled,
"I mean, honestly, I just thought of my baby. You know, cancer is the — that's the word you don't wanna hear. There's a lot of other things that you feel like you can beat. But you know, cancer takes down a lot of people. And I just thought about my baby."
Amy Schumer also has her own health problems. Back in February, she was diagnosed with Cushing syndrome, a hormonal disorder that occurs from an overproduction of cortisol by the adrenal glands, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
The possible symptoms might include weight gain, high blood pressure, and bone loss. Amy Schumer made an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, at the time. The actress recalled that went to get a check-up from the doctor days after fans began questioning why she had a "puffier" face. She said,
"While I was doing press on camera for my Hulu show, I was also in MRI machines four hours at a time, having my veins shut down from the amount of blood drawn and thinking I may not be around to see my son grow up. So finding out I have the kind of Cushing that will just work itself out and I'm healthy was the greatest news imaginable."
She was on her promo tour for season 2 of Life & Beth. The full episodes of the show are available on Disney +, Hulu, and Prime Video.
