Batman and Robin is a 1997 superhero film based on DC Comics characters Batman and Robin. Filmed by Joel Schumacher and Peter MacGregor-Scott, this was the fourth and last film in Warner Bros.' original Batman run.

Batman is played by George Clooney; Chris O'Donnell plays Robin, while Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the villain, Mr. Freeze. First released on June 20, 1997, the film depicts the couple's battle to remain together while battling Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze.

The Batman and Robin soundtrack, titled Batman & Robin: Music from and Inspired by the Motion Picture, gained much praise than the movie itself.

Released ahead of the movie in May 1997, it included musicians, including R. Kelly, Goo Glow Dolls, R.E.M. and The Smashing Pumpkins together with a range of musical genres. Commercially successful, the album earned platinum certification and even a Grammy Award for its lead single.

The official synopsis says:

"Batman and Robin try to keep their relationship together even as they must stop Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy from freezing Gotham City."

Soundtracks of Batman and Robin

The End Is the Beginning Is the End – The Smashing Pumpkins

"The End Is the Beginning Is the End," the first song the Smashing Pumpkins wrote, appears in the closing credits.

It became among the most well-known songs of the film and won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance. The hard rock tones of the song complement the film's intensity.

Look into My Eyes – Bone Thugs-n-Harmony

Another great on the Batman and Robin soundtrack was Bone Thugs-n- Harmony's "Look into My Eyes". It gave the album a seamless hip-hop touch and peaked at number four on American charts. The song captures the emotional conflict inside the storyline of the movie.

Gotham City – R. Kelly

The soulful "Gotham City" by R. Kelly fits Gotham City's sinister, enigmatic character.

Rising to number nine in the United States, the song was among the most often listened to tracks on the album. Its gentle rhythm offers a good contrast to the fast-paced action scenes in the movie.

Lazy Eye – Goo Goo Dolls

"Lazy Eye" by Goo Goo Dolls gives a grunge rock feel, blending in with the chaotic yet gripping narrative of Batman and Robin. Although not a chart-topper, the track gained recognition as a solid addition to the soundtrack.

Fun for Me – Moloko

Moloko’s "Fun for Me" brings a lively and playful electronic beat, breaking the intensity of the soundtrack. It became a hit on the U.S. Dance Play Chart, reaching number four. The track introduced the Irish-English duo to the American audience.

Revolution – R.E.M.

R.E.M.'s "Revolution" has the alternative rock element that complements the rebellious motif of the movie. This song clearly shows the band's trademark sound, which gives the tale of Batman and Robin vitality.

Foolish Games – Jewel

Jewel’s "Foolish Games," with its emotional lyrics, became a chart-topping ballad from the soundtrack. It peaked at number two in the U.S. and provided a touching contrast to the more intense songs on the album. The song’s radio remix version gained significant popularity.

Poison Ivy – Meshell Ndegeocello

Meshell Ndegeocello’s "Poison Ivy" fits the character's seduction and dangerous allure. The track’s deep, moody, rhythm aligns perfectly with Poison Ivy's menacing presence in the movie.

Moaner – Underworld

Underworld's "Moaner" runs over ten minutes and adds an electronic, trance-like sound to the soundtrack. Its length and repetitive beats make it stand out from the rest, offering a unique sound that reflects the film’s surreal elements.

True to Myself – Eric Benét

Eric Benét's "True to Myself" is a soulful, R&B-infused song that conveys themes of self-discovery. This track brings a mellow, introspective tone to the otherwise high-energy soundtrack of Batman and Robin.

A Batman Overture – Elliot Goldenthal

The orchestral "A Batman Overture" by Elliot Goldenthal brings a classic, cinematic feel to the soundtrack. While the rest of the album consists of popular music, this overture offers a traditional, powerful score element.

Songs Not in the Movie

Several songs on the Batman and Robin soundtrack never made it to the film. Although not in the film itself, the soundtrack featured songs like "The Beginning Is the End Is the Beginning" by The Smashing Pumpkins and "Moaner" by Underworld.

Their inclusion on the record offered listeners a more varied musical taste than they would have seen on movie.

Comprising a mix of rock, R&B and electronic music, the Batman and Robin soundtrack is among the best aspects of the movie. Although the movie had flaws, the soundtrack was unquestionably successful.

Hits like "The End Is the Beginning Is the End" and "Look into My Eyes," combined with critical and financial success, including a Grammy Award, the album retains a place in listeners' hearts even after decades, as it emphasizes how excellent music can surpass the shortcomings of a movie.
