About Better Off Dead
The official summary for Better Off Dead, both written and directed by Savage Steve Holland, emphasizes the main storyline of this classic film from the 1980s. The movie focuses on Lane Meyer (portrayed by John Cusack), a high school student whose life is thrown into chaos when his girlfriend, Beth, suddenly breaks up with him for an arrogant ski jock.
Heartbroken and feeling utterly confused, Lane falls into a deep state of despair and begins to consider suicide as a way out. However, his increasingly misguided and hilariously ineffective attempts to take his life lead him only to a series of embarrassing and ridiculous circumstances.
Each failed attempt heightens his emotional distress and traps him in comical scenarios featuring quirky side characters, such as a menacing paperboy and a mysterious foreign exchange student who unexpectedly takes an interest in him. The official synopsis of the movie reads:
"Lane (John Cusack) resolves to commit suicide after his girlfriend dumps him for the captain of the ski team. His unsuccessful attempts only lead him into more awkward and embarrassing situations, and eventually to a race that has unexpected results."
