Black Panther is the eighteenth film by Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the first movie solely dedicated to the character. The movie was directed by Ryan Coogler, who wrote the script in collaboration with Joe Robert Cole. The character was portrayed by Chadwick Boseman who first appeared in Captain America: Civil War in 2016.
The movie was officially announced back in October 2014. Black Panther made its release theatrically on February 16, 2018, and became the first Marvel movie to be solely directed by a Black filmmaker, with a majorly black cast. The movie received a major reception, grossing over $ 1.3 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film by a Black filmmaker.
With three Oscars wins, the movie turned iconic for its official soundtrack and background music, which was deeply inspired by African culture. Black Panther's songs were predominantly written and composed by Ludwig Göransson in collaboration with the iconic American singer and rapper Kendrick Lamar. Göransson went on a tour across parts of Africa, accompanied by Baaba Maal, the Senegalese singer, finding the raw forms of sounds to create the ambience of Wakanda.
