Who was behind the murders in Borderless Fog?

When Sanja saw Thomas' severed head, she realized she wasn't alone at the factory. She watched Bujang, the guard, strolling around. He described how he discovered Arum, a young girl, in the wilderness.

He'd offered to get her some soothing tea so she could sleep. Sanja believed he was the one who killed Thomas since he was holding his head in one hand. Bujang went on to affirm his innocence, saying that Panca had shot Thomas and used a battle knife to decapitate him.

Sanja corrected him, saying that the murderer used two quick blows to decapitate his victims, and Bujang speculated that Panca might be a serial killer. Bujang just nodded as Sanja said with absolute certainty that he was the real murderer.

Borderless Fog ending explained

At the end of Borderless Fog, Bujang confesses to the killings and believes he did what was necessary for the Dayak community. The human trafficking racket exploited the oppressed, leading to the murder of Asraf and Juwing. Sanja, who had never had ill motives towards his community, decides to let go of Bujang.

Arum is brought home safely from the factory, while Agam is killed after being charged with multiple murders. Sanja chooses not to speak about Panca's involvement in the human trafficking business because it could ruin Thomas' reputation and put the Dayak community in further trouble. She also chooses to protect Bujang because the truth could put the Dayak community in further trouble.

However, Sanja's past continues to trouble her, and she lives with a sense of constant guilt. She was involved in a hit-and-run case that resulted in the death of a young girl and was training to become a police officer.

She chose to bury the truth, with her father, friends, and seniors helping her cover up her crime. In the end, Sanja stands up to her father, refusing to follow orders.

At the end:

Bujang's head is found hanging from a tree, with two possible explanations: one, the ghost of Ambong from the folklore killed Bujang after fulfilling his purpose, or someone close to the traffickers figured out the truth and killed Bujang the same way he had killed Panca, Umi, and Thoriq.

The ghost of Ambong is significant in Borderless Fog, as he was said to be one of the Paraku Communist leaders who had escaped and settled as a ghost in the forest. The spirit of the forest helped Bujang cover up his crimes and encouraged him to be fearless.
