Humane is a horror thriller directed by Caitlin Cronenberg in her debut feature film. Caitlin is the daughter of filmmaker David Cronenberg, regarded as one of the originators of the body horror genre.
Humane shows a near future where the environment is swiftly becoming inhospitable and, if left unchecked, might become catastrophic. So, world leaders are taking radical steps to reduce the world population, including the encouragement of euthanasia.
The York family house becomes a horror cabin when Dawn Kim, who had volunteered to die with Charles York, runs away. Now, one of the York siblings has to take her place.
Humane boasts of an ensemble of talented actors, including Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, Sebastian Chacon, Alanna Bale, Sirena Gulamgaus, Uni Park, Enrico Colantoni, and Peter Gallagher
The main cast of Humane
1) Jay Baruchel as Jared
Jay Baruchel is playing Jared York, a television personality who gives his commentary on government schemes. When government agents reveal one of the York siblings must volunteer to get euthanized, Jared suggests that Noah, the adopted sibling, must volunteer to die.
Jared's character is quite a departure from Jay's mostly comic roles. He has been part of some of the most popular comedy films of the last 20 years, including Knocked Up, This is the End, and She's Out of My League. He also voiced Hiccup in the How to Train Your Dragon series.
2) Emily Hampshire as Rachel
Emily Hampshire is playing Rachel York, the oldest sibling of the York family. She is the CEO of a large pharmaceutical company.
Hampshire is of Canadian descent and was born in Montreal. She had an interest in performing arts since she was a child. She took part in her school's theatre plays, and at 16, she moved to Toronto to pursue a film career.
Before Humane, Hamphshire's most popular role is Stevie Budd in the CBC comedy series Schitt's Creek.
3) Peter Gallagher as Charles
Peter Gallagher is an acting veteran, having worked mostly in Broadway and television for almost 48 years. He got his break in films in Steven Soderbergh's S*x, Lies, and Videotape in 1989.
After a decent film career in the 90s, he gained popularity by playing Sandy Cohen in the iconic Fox Television show The O.C. In Humane, Gallagher plays Charles York, the family patriarch, who decides to get euthanized with Dawn Kim.
4) Enrico Colantoni as Bob
Enrico Colantoni is also an acting veteran, working in Hollywood for almost 38 years. He has been part of some iconic films, including Steven Spielberg's A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Steven Soderbergh's Contagion.
Enrico is playing Bob, a government agent who oversees the euthanasia process. He is a hard-boiled and seemingly heartless man who sees no immorality in his deeds. He withholds information, manipulates, and even kills people for his work.
5) Sebastian Chacon as Noah
Sebastian Chacon's most prominent role before appearing in Humane was in the musical drama miniseries Daisy Jones & the Six, in which he played the drummer Warren Rojas.
He is playing Noah York, the adopted sibling. He is ousted by others as a suitable person for voluntarily dying, as he is adopted, unsuccessful, and had accidentally killed a woman before. However, Noah doesn't give up so easily and fights for his survival.
