In the last few minutes of Carry-On, TSA agent Ethan Kopek is desperately trying to stop the Traveler from applying a deadly nerve agent on Congresswoman Grace Turner. Focusing on Los Angeles International Airport during the Christmas season, the movie shows Kopek's desire to get a higher salary, which makes him an unintentional target for the mysterious terrorist known only as the Traveler.

This seems simple: Kopek must let a specific carry-on luggage pass through the security scanners without interference. Nora, his pregnant airport worker wife, will be shot and killed if he doesn't comply.

After discovering it contains Novichok, Kopek takes all measures to stop the luggage from reaching its destination. Despite his best efforts, the Traveler is too skilled, forcing Kopek to give up his luggage.

However, as the Traveler boards the plane carrying Congresswoman Turner, her family, and numerous other passengers, he attempts to place the trolley with the weapon into the overhead compartment. At this critical moment, Kopek realizes that he has outmaneuvered the Traveler in a clever twist.

The hostage situation in Carry-On

In the unfolding events, the Traveler exerts control over Nora from a distance, following the assistance of his associate, the Watcher. This manipulation compels Kopek to act according to the Traveler's directives.

However, when Kopek decides to leave the Novichok weapon and the earpiece that keeps him connected with Traveler, the dynamics shift dramatically. In response, the Traveler instructs the Watcher to target Nora directly.

Nora's growing suspicion

Throughout the story, Nora thinks Kopek's strange behavior is because they are about to have a baby, and she wants him to apply to the police academy again. Due to this misunderstanding, she can't make good decisions and see how bad Kopek's problems are.

She changes her mind when she reads a message from Kopek that was sent through Eddie, one of his coworkers. Nora starts to realize Kopek is dealing with much more than just personal and professional stress after seeing the Watcher's aggressive chase.

The Watcher's attack

As the tension escalates, the Watcher violently attacks Eddie, eliminating him and setting his sights on Nora. In a frantic attempt to seek help, Nora finds herself in a deserted parking lot during the busy Christmas season. Her cries go unnoticed amid the holiday chaos, and the Watcher's relentless search worsens her situation.

Once Kopek has gotten past the Traveler's influence, he is determined to find Nora and keep her safe. As the Watcher gets ready to fire, he runs to help her when he hears her screams.

At this crucial moment, Jesse saves the couple by shooting the Watcher in the leg. When Jesse shows up at the right time, it saves Nora and Kopek's lives even though danger is close.

Jesse's sacrifice in Carry-On

After the rescue, the Traveler manipulated Jesse to control Mateo Flores and smuggle the Novichok onto a plane. Caught in the Watcher's van, Jesse escapes. Jesse grabs the Watcher's sniper rifle after the van crashes during the chase.

Mateo dies trying to kill Kopek on the Traveler's orders, but his decisive action saves Nora and Kopek. After their ordeal, Jesse recovers Nora and Kopek, but he dies before the reunion, highlighting the cost of their struggle.

Unveiling the Traveler's scheme

LAPD officer Elena Cole starts an investigation that parallels what's happening at LAX in Carry-On. Elena has to find the strange link between the burned-out remains of Olek and Yuri's greenhouse and a suspicious 911 call from the airport. When she discovers the word "Novichok" on a hidden recording device she took from Olek's watch, she makes a big discovery.

Cole tells the FBI to look into the matter further because he knows how serious the situation is. But her plans are thwarted when a fake Agent Alcott shows up instead of the real one, which almost kills Cole on the way to LAX. Cole shows her strength by beating the impostor and killing him with a precise headshot.

When Cole arrives at the airport, Kopek orders her to examine Flight 1850 passengers. He believes the Traveler and his Novichok-laden carry-on can be identified by Mateo's boarding pass.

Kopek's diagnosis is wrong. The blue-haired woman who gave Kopek the earpiece is Traveler's assistant. He was redirected to Flight 0610, which carries Congresswoman Grace Turner.

The threat against Congresswoman Grace Turner

Grace Turner is pushing for DTD Act support in Congress. However, she lacks the votes to pass it. The act, which rebrands warfare as defense, attracts weapons manufacturers eager to boost firearm sales by claiming to protect democracies.

The Traveler and his associates want to kill Congresswoman Turner and all Flight 0610 passengers with Russian nerve gas. They want to create a foreign attack on American soil to label the US a "threatened democracy." This manipulation is meant to sway the DTD Act to support Traveler's gun proliferation agenda under the guise of national security.

Cole tells the airport traffic control tower to ground Flight 0610 immediately after discovering the plot. Kopek advises against this and reveals his own plan to stop the Traveler.

Kopek's strategic countermove and the downfall of the Traveler

Kopek intercepts the Traveler's nerve agent release by replacing the release mechanism with a check-in luggage-like bag. The bag's red ribbon and similar appearance fool the Traveler into missing the switch.

The Traveler realizes he was outmaneuvered when trying to put the bag in Flight 0610's overhead bin. He lets the cabin crew put his bag in the cargo hold and plans to retrieve it later and jump out.

According to Kopek, Cole should let Flight 0610 go ahead because stopping the flight would force the Traveler to act quickly, which would cause the nerve agent to be released and put everyone on board in danger.

Kopek can get to the cargo bay because the Traveler stays calm by letting the flight continue. Using quick thinking, Kopek locates the bag in the cargo area and disables the nerve agent mechanism, which he had already neutralized earlier in the movie.

The Traveler confronts Kopek as he makes a desperate sprint toward the cargo bay, resulting in Kopek being shot in the leg. Kopek, undeterred, locates the refrigerator intended to contain the nerve agent and discovers that the vial of Novichok is absent from the mechanism.

Upon recognizing Kopek's deception, the Traveler endeavors to activate the device; however, he is unsuccessful when Kopek forcibly pushes him into the refrigerator, deposits the vial inside, and secures the door. The Traveler is rendered incapacitated by the nerve agent that was released, prompting the pilots to reroute Flight 0610 to LAX.

In Carry-On's ending, everyone on Flight 0610 gets off safely, including Congresswoman Grace Turner and her child. They are no longer at risk of being exposed to nerve toxin. Elena Cole tells Kopek that she admires his bravery and encourages him to get in touch when he is better.

Years later, Kopek is on vacation with Nora, their child Jason, and his family. As a police officer for the LAPD, Kopek has built the stable and happy life he always wanted for himself and his family. His relationship with Jason has gotten better since Kopek used his power to clear Jason, who had been fired from his TSA job under pretenses that Kopek set up to help the Traveler's plans.

Kopek's former coworkers, like Ron and Maria, respect and approve of this action. They are still confused by the strange things that happened during that crazy Christmas season.
