After five seasons that turned a quirky college comedy into a cult classic Community: The Movie is finally making the leap to the big screen. The series was known for its clever digs at TV tropes and love for meta-humor has created a considerable fan base for Community: The Movie.
Dan Harmon who is the brain behind the original show is steering the ship as the director so fans are expecting a reunion that doubles down on the Greendale charm.
Joel McHale, alongside Harmon, is reprising his role and stepping in as an executive producer working with industry vets like Russ Krasnoff and Gary Foster to bring the project to life.
Production is moving along though it's had its share of pauses and is mostly waiting for the stars' schedules to align.
Dan Harmon has been candid about the challenges and triumphs of bringing this project to life.
"It’s a big step, getting everyone back together, but we're there," Harmon shared in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter on July 2024. "We’ve got a script that feels right, and the funding is in place, thanks to Peacock stepping in."
But with a script in place and funding secured, it looks like the Greendale gang will be back sooner rather than later to offer fans the closure they have been chanting for since "six seasons and a movie" became their rallying cry.
Cast and the characters of Community: The Movie
The upcoming Community: The Movie brings back familiar faces from Greendale Community College to make sure that the unique chemistry that fueled the show remains intact.
Joel McHale returns as Jeff Winger who is the smooth-talking ex-lawyer and whose charm and quick wit never fail to impress or at least deflect.
His character was once the reluctant leader of the study group and has likely evolved but the core of Jeff's appeal remains his sarcasm and surprising depth.
Gillian Jacobs reprises her role as Britta Perry who is a well-meaning if often misguided activist and whose attempts to improve the world (and her friends) often backfire humorously.
Britta’s relentless idealism and quirky pronunciations ("bag-el" anyone?) are set to bring laughter and perhaps some eye-rolls from her beloved study group.
Danny Pudi’s Abed Nadir continues to be the meta-referencing and pop-culture-loving filmmaker who possibly has achieved his dreams of directing. Abed’s ability to turn any scenario into a homage to film and TV tropes will undoubtedly be central to the movie's plot.
Alison Brie is back as Annie Edison whose mix of naivete and meticulousness made her both endearing and frustrating for her peers but her character's journey from a high-strung overachiever to someone who embraces the unpredictability of life at Greendale has been one of growth and self-discovery.
Donald Glover whose exit in Season 5 left fans wanting more returns as Troy Barnes. He is known for his innocence and hilarious antics with Abed so it will be interesting to see where his adventures with LeVar Burton have led him.
Yvette Nicole Brown rounds out the cast as Shirley Bennett who is the nurturing yet occasionally fierce mother hen of the group and whose sweet exterior often belies her competitive spirit.
Production of Community: The Movie
The gears of production of Community: The Movie are finally in motion which points towards a potential screen reunion for Greendale's most infamous study group. The production timeline has seen its share of delays which is mostly due to aligning the busy schedules of its star-studded cast.
Joel McHale echoed Harmon's sentiments in a discussion with Variety on July 2024, stating, "We’re all committed to making this happen. It’s just about finding that window where we can all come together. But we’re close, very close."
As for a release date, nothing is set in stone but the team is targeting a premiere in late 2025.
"We're hopeful to start shooting by mid-2025 and have it ready for the fans by the end of the year," McHale mentioned in a GQ interview on July 2024.
Community: The movie will possibly be released in mid-2025.
